Why Are Service Managers In A Broken System? | SDR #298

Chris Collins and Christian discuss why service managers are stuck in broken systems and how to fix them. They use a magician and assistant analogy to explain the problem, share workshop stories from a library setting, and note that August events are sold out but September has openings.

Welcome, everybody, to the big show. Today we are going to talk about why service managers are in a broken system. We're going to give you some insights on how to reverse that and change the system, change the overall approach and what we. What we see to be the magic in that. Also, Chris, Joan here is going to give everybody a lesson on how to be a magician's assistant. And there's some really fun stuff in the news today, I would say really.
Good, relevant stuff in the news.
That and much, much more coming up right now on Service Drive Revolution.
If you're doing something like some sort of performance, like, say, a magic show. Have you ever done a magic show?
Oh, yeah. Where there's the assistant.
Yeah. Like, say you're cutting somebody in half during the magic show.
Yeah.
And you require like the. The assistant to help and because it's, you know, it's an illusion of some.
Yeah.
Nobody's really getting cut in half. We all know that. But the illusion of somebody being cut in half and then you have the assistant who maybe like, right at the right moment as you're putting the saw through, pushes the. Their legs to the other side of the little casket or. I don't know, whatever.
Don't ask Christian to be the assistant.
Yeah, that's. That's probably really good, sound advice. I blew it, didn't I? I blew my. My.
What were you thinking about?
Some of the information reviewed earlier in the day.
It's so funny that.
So we just did our first leadership experience here in the library. This library, believe it or built for this experience. It's the whole reason we built it was for this leadership experience. And we just did our first one and we rehearsed parts of it. Right. We talked about, like, we. We've been working on this thing. Been working on it for a while. Also. Christian is the one that's helped me with the thing the most. Like, we went and did versions of it, although you thought like 70% of the content's different.
It was. It was. Well, maybe not different, but it was punched up.
Yeah.
Punched up is a really good way to describe it. So.
And so there's a part at the very, very end of day two that's the end of what happens here in the library. And then we go somewhere else, which is about. And we can't really talk about it. We're talking about it in code.
Yeah.
Because unless you're here, there'll be a couple people listening to this that were there will understand exactly what we're talking about.
And they probably didn't catch it. There was something wrong at the time. But now that they hear this, they'll know that there was. There was cues missed.
And so I. I said to Christian, like at the break, before that, or maybe even at lunch.
I was like, when. When I nod at you, do the.
Thing, didn't I nod back instead of doing anything?
No, you didn't even look at me.
Oh.
And yeah. And then. And then he gets up and he leaves. Like, I don't know where you went. You must have went to the bathroom or something.
Maybe.
And then I start. I kind of started to get nervous because now I was going to have to break character and feel like, hey, you in the back.
I'm a terrible.
Can you do the thing? It's just supposed to automatically happen.
Which is kind of funny because if you think about the first few that we did out in. Out in the wild, I feel like I was a really good assistant. Like, I was managing.
You were not. What did you do before?
Every.
Every one of them. Which you tried to kind of do this time too, in a sense. But Christian, we talked about this.
Right.
Have we told them?
But not for a long time.
Right before it would start, like literally two minutes before the. The workshop would start, I'm at the front of the room. People are sitting down. They're literally just waiting for me to cut the music and go. Christian would walk up and tell me the most.
Off limits joke you could imagine.
Super inappropriate.
Yeah. And then walk away smiling. And now I'm supposed to one not feel guilty that I just laughed at the most. Like, because that's the. I think that's the thing that you and I both like is like, you shouldn't laugh at it because it's not. It's not okay.
Yeah.
But then it's funny because you laugh at it and it's not okay.
Right.
We share that similar.
There's nothing.
Right. We're messed up good. The other thing I would say about the. The leadership thing is I think our people were as affected as much as the people in the room. And they're supposed to be working the event.
Yeah.
So how did everybody become a part? How are you staring off into space when you're supposed to get ready with the saw in the casket?
Yeah. I had some stuff going on. Like, it was a. It's funny.
Yes. And that's how it ends. We saw somebody in half.
Yes. But not really. Well, except that one guy.
Ah. His legs will grow back.
Yeah. For sure. But. But yeah, it was a. It was Great. Good feedback from the people and yeah, it got pretty deep. So I think if anybody's an opportunity to go to that thing, you should check it out.
August is uh, bought out. August.
Yes. And now we're somebody opening September for.
Their company.
Immediately after their people. Like two days after that event. He's like, I gotta bring everybody from all over the world.
That's gonna turn out to be a really good investment. I have the feeling. Oh yeah, yeah, it's pretty exciting.
Okay, what's in the news?
Okay, so I've got a couple of things. I'm going to try to do this in a really strategic order. So first, this is more just of a fun thing. They did a survey of mechanics and said which are the trucks that you would definitely not buy. So it's like the stay away from list and some of them are pretty interesting.
Trucks you would not buy.
Trucks you wouldn't buy.
Do you have a list of trucks you wouldn't buy? You're a Chevy guy.
No, I had a. I had a dot. A Ram.
Yeah. You almost killed me in that.
I remember that one. I almost killed you in. I'm probably the one that I'm least interested in was is F150s or Ford their truck. Although it's a best selling truck in America. But number one on this list of trucks to stay away from. The 2003 to 2005 Ford Super Duty. It's a diesel engine and.
