Don't Wake Up in the Same Place You Were Yesterday

A speaker's red-eye flight from Arizona got canceled, so he booked a different one and woke up in Philadelphia instead. His lesson: never wake up in the same place physically or mentally as yesterday. Set incremental goals each day to move closer to what you actually want.

Don't wake up in the same place that you started the day before. I was traveling home from Arizona and I took a red-eye flight. Taking a red-eye flight, I tend to convince myself that's a really good idea. Why? Because I would rather wake up and be home, or at least be at the airport that can get me home the next day, instead of sleeping getting a good night's sleep in a hotel room like a normal person, and then getting on a flight, and then being home the next day. But I can tell you, this is the last time that I took a red-eye flight, and here's why. I'm sitting there in the airport in Arizona. I'm exhausted from the conference that I just attended all day long. And my flight's supposed to take off in about 10 minutes, and at that time, I get the worst news possible. I bet you can get it. Your flight is canceled. Yay! Flight's canceled 10 minutes before I'm supposed to take off on a red-eye flight home, exhausted from the entire day. So what do I do? I stand up in absolute shock, look around, everybody else is shocked. And then what else happens next? And If you've ever been on a canceled flight, the person comes over the PA and says, everybody over to the customer service line, we're going to help get you home, but you have to come over here and try to get some vouchers and figure out what the hell just happened. Well, I did not want to be like the rest of the people that were going over to that customer service line. I immediately picked up my phone because I'm super tech savvy, I looked at my app and I said, what's the next flight? And I started scrolling through all the different flights. Now, as you can imagine, they all just started to get filled up. So what I did next was just pick a flight that was going to get me closer to the Northeast. I picked a flight, I jumped on that flight, and the next morning I woke up in Philadelphia. Now, why did I do that? I did that because the number one thing I had in my head was, don't wake up here. I needed to be closer to my home because I knew if I could get one step closer, even if it wasn't exactly to the airport that was going to take me home, I needed to get someplace closer so I did not wake up in Arizona. That's a simple lesson that I take every single time, not only just on flights, the simple lesson that I tell myself with anything I do in my life. If I know that I can just get one step closer to my goal and don't wake up in the exact same place, not just physically but mentally, in the exact same place where I started my day, then I know I'm always going to get closer to my goals. So taking this from a practical standpoint and not just from a nightmare from an airport, Set your goals and then set your incremental goals as well. See, as I'm sitting in the airport, I only had one goal in my head: get the direct flight, go to Boston, and then drive home to Newport, Rhode Island. But unfortunately, we got sidetracked there, so my goals slightly shifted, and I just thought, if I could just get slightly closer to where I need to be, I'm gonna put myself in a better position to accomplish that goal of getting home. So instead, I shifted and went to Philadelphia instead of waiting and sitting in the line with everyone else at customer service. So as you're thinking through the story and relating it to your life, look at the goals that you have. And do you have those incremental goals so that no matter what, tomorrow when you wake up, you're one step closer? If you don't, I'm going to highly encourage you to go ahead and start setting these incremental goals just in case you show up to a flight and it gets canceled.
