How to Build Discipline When You're Not Motivated

Chris Prefontaine argues that low motivation stems from self-negotiation and broken promises. Pick one tiny non-negotiable daily task, like making five calls, and never skip it. This builds trust in yourself and compounds into real discipline.

So how do you build discipline when you don't even feel like it? As I promised you last week, I want to go over that. Last week I said something that probably hit a nerve. I hope. I said, you're not stuck, you're undisciplined. Now some of you maybe got upset with me, but let's take the next step because here's the question that comes right after that, I hope. How do I actually build discipline when I don't feel like doing anything? That's the most important time to do it, right? Valid question. Instead of getting upset with me from last week's Motivational Monday, simple answer. You stop negotiating with yourself. You go, ah, wait, what are you talking about? Yeah, that's the game. Because right now, whether you realize it or not, you are negotiating. We all are. All day long with ourself. Yourself. That's who you're negotiating with. That's right. It sounds like this. I'll do it later. I'll start tomorrow. I'll do it when I feel better. I'll do it when the kids finish school. I'll do it when, when, when you fill in the blank. I get this all the time from people. That's called negotiation, guys, with yourself. And every time you give in, you are literally, without you knowing it, training yourself to break your own word, your own discipline, your own pattern. That's why discipline feels so hard. It's not that you can't do the work. It's that you don't trust yourself to follow through, consciously or not. So we fix that first. Okay. But not with some massive, special, intricate plan. With actually something very small, but non-negotiable is the key. Here's what I suggest you do. Pick one small activity, not 5, not 10, one. Calls, conversations, follow-ups, stop by a house near you and set a minimum standard. Minimum standard is not a goal. It's a standard that you will not Stop the day until you do. Example, um, I make 5 calls every day, no matter what. I don't care what it takes. I'm going to talk to 5 people. That's a standard. It's not a stretch goal. It's not 50. In other words, it's, that's my standard. 5. But here's the rule. You don't skip it. Like, ever. You can do more, but you can never do less. That's how you rebuild trust with yourself. Consciously and subconsciously, because discipline isn't about that intensity. As I said last week, it's about keeping promises, small ones repeated every day, every day, every day. I call this type of daily thing stacking. And here's where most people mess this stacking thing up. They try to do way too much too fast. So they go from zero to some massive plan that they just can't sustain. And when they fall off, they think they failed. They beat on themselves. You didn't fail. You just went too big, too quick. Try it. Try winning small and try winning daily, and then stack those wins. Just keep stacking and watch what happens over a couple weeks. Your confidence starts to creep up, your consistency locks in, and now you're not forcing discipline. You're sort of operating from within it. Not sure where to get started?
