Maximize Productivity by Integrating Joy into Your Routine

Zach leads a workshop on preventing burnout by dedicating 20% of your workday to activities you love. A John Maxwell study of doctors and nurses found that just one hour daily of a beloved activity dramatically reduces burnout. The group identifies their top passions and brainstorms how to build them into every day, not just weekends.

What does the immersion level need right now? And some things that Mike told me were, all right, we need consistency. We need some mindset training today, because what we're finding is, you know, a lot of people are working really hard right now. We're coming up to the end of the year. A lot of people working hard, and some are either feeling some burnout or Are not haven't reached their goals that they hoped to, so maybe feeling a little bit down on on the challenge or the situation. So I said, great, perfect. That's that's a part of what we're going to talk about today because really what we're going to hit on is a couple things. One is I want to take note about where we currently are and what we're currently doing. Next is I want to be able to create a filter or a decision-making process. So that way you can now make better decisions that create an alignment between you and your end goals. And then lastly, I want to start the process of helping you, and Mike will take over this in the last 30 minutes because I'm gonna jump off and Mike's gonna run it. And that is, I want to take the next step in the next process of helping you now Create your 2024 plan because we're almost at we're halfway through October. So this is all about understanding where we are so we can create alignment through a filter, and then that's going to allow us to now take the next step with our business, and not only our business but our personal lives. Right? Something that I've always found, especially when it comes to either solopreneurs, founders of companies, is the company is actually a mirror of them. Right? The reality is everything that's been built in that company is is not like separate. It's all personal. People always say, you know, this isn't business or this isn't personal. It's just business. I was explaining to one of my teammates. I said, no, no, everything is personal in business, and that's because it's very personal when it comes to creating a business. So at the end of the day, each and every one of you is either starting your business or growing your business, which means that you are the leader of the business. And your job isn't necessarily just to generate profits and revenue, but it's actually to grow and lead people in order to help them either align with your mission or to help them align with their mission and be able to create their dream long-term as well. Can everybody agree with that? Love it. All right, very good. What I've discovered, so I've actually been to multiple conferences so far, just in the last 30 days. I've been to like 2 for speaking in person and 2 for learning in just the last 30 days. And one of the events that I went and attended was a John Maxwell event. So John Maxwell, does everybody know who John Maxwell is? Yeah, you go ahead and raise your hand if you know who John Maxwell is. John Maxwell, one of the greatest leadership trainers there are. And whether you're religious or not, his message is insane, meaning he can directly communicate how to develop a leader. So I attended this event. It was actually— he hosted the live event in Atlanta, and then there was 300 satellite events going on that were live streaming in. And one of the speakers that came on, he talked about this thing called Love, right? And when we hear the word love, it sounds like a bit like fluffy, either foo-foo, right? It's like, how do you put love in business? And when he first started talking, I was like, this guy, man, this is— this isn't going to be good. I'm like, what is this guy even talking about? But as he decided to dive into it, he made some very good scientific proven points that then I was like, I think I like what this guy's saying. So follow me. He went ahead and he conducted a study. Now, the study was with a group of people that are known to be the most burnt-out group of people when it comes to working their jobs. Does anybody know who they are? Does anybody know what the highest burnout rate is for an employee? Does anybody know what position that is? Air traffic controller? A good guess.
Dentist.
Uh, well, that's close.
Surgeon.
It's a doctor. Doctor and nurses, especially as you can imagine from COVID uh, that was the highest burnout rate. So what they did is they took the highest burnout rate position known to man across the board, um, and what they discovered was If somebody, or if each one of them was able to incorporate just 20% of their time doing something they loved, they were significantly less likely to burn out. Just 20%. That means if you have an 8-hour day, you have like basically 1 hour of that day that you just have to do something you like. Or you love to do. I know you're you may be sitting there thinking like, okay, I'm a real estate investor, or I'm a I'm a W two employee and a real estate investor. Like what would I actually be doing that I love? What was interesting is I jumped on the phone with Chris, and he actually kind of chuckled a bit because I said, look, we most of our community are W two employees that don't like their job. And then they come home from work and they do the thing they don't like to do, which is cold call. I'm like, are we not setting people up to be burnt out? The fact is that that's part of the gig, right? That's part of the process. But if I— if you and I today, say, for the next couple minutes, discover what we love to do, can we not incorporate that in our daily activities? The answer is we absolutely can. And the fact is, if we actually set aside that hour, it'll actually make us better at being W-2 employees, which means that we might be able to last through the process while we're trying to get to the finish line. And then 2 is, hey, we might actually be better on the phone and communicate better with people because positive tracks positive, and we might get more deals. See, the thing in which actually creates the deals We can either look at it to be very negative or very positive, but the only way we actually look at a positive lens is if we are in a positive mood. Can we all agree to that? So this single thing that we're going to do here today, which I know you're sitting there like, this guy's going to talk about love. The single thing that we're going to do here today is to discover, and it doesn't have to be real estate related, it doesn't have to be job related, but what we need to discover is what can we incorporate in our daily routine? Because the key to this The key to happiness within this study was not that you did it 20% of the time; it's that you did it 20% of the time daily. That's important because it's really easy to say, "Oh, I'm just going to do this 20% of the time. I'm only going to do it on Saturdays, right? I'm just going to do it all Saturday." But it wasn't sustainable unless you were doing it daily. It's almost like a rejuvenation, right? It's a second wind, as most of us will see. It's like if you enjoy working out and you don't work out in the morning, but you work out like right in the afternoon, your second half of your day actually tends to be better because you've just created a really just created an additional wave of energy because you just did something you liked. Or if you take a break in the day in order to go for a walk, I mean, it regenerates energy. Or if you're really into helping people and you help that one person, all of a sudden Your day is different. See, because we can't see positivity unless we're in positivity. If we've ever noticed, on the flip side, if we're in negative, everything sucks. Like, it's almost hard to find something positive if you're in a bad mood. But if you're in a good mood, everything seems to be positive. So the only way in which— or the more— yeah, so the only way in which we're actually going to generate more of the thing and that we hope to attract Is if we get into that mode first. Is that all making sense to you guys so far? So this is going to be just a simple thing. So there's 2 things I want to do right now. Number one is I want to take a couple minutes, and I want you to go ahead and write down like the top 5 things that you love to do. And I don't want there to be any filters because the truth is each and every one of us is built differently, right? So if Dan Furness writes something that he loves to do, and I write something I love to do, and John Ettricks writes something he loves to do. They all could be different, but they affect us differently, right? They affect us like what Dan writes that he loves, I could be like, that is absolutely awful, I would never want to do that. What's funny is Mike Mack, we were talking on the phone today and he was like, yeah, I don't like doing call critiques for people. Now he does them. I get on the phone with Rick Abbiati the other day and he goes, I love doing call critiques for people. Totally different person, right? So I want there to be an unfiltered bias here now for yourself, right? What we'll do is we'll shut off the cameras for a couple of minutes. You can pretend like you're by yourself, because the way this, this gentleman described it is that if we live in a world of black and white threads, we're looking for the one red thread, the one that gets us excited. So let's, let's take a couple of minutes. Let's write down the top 3 to 5 things It's 4:20 right now. Get all of you guys, get your mind out of the gutter. What we'll do is we'll take the next 3 minutes at 4:23. Let's— you guys can shut off your cameras if you want. Let's brainstorm right down there, 3 to 5 things that you love. We'll come back, we'll share a couple, and then we're gonna take a next step here in just a second. Okay, I think you popped up first. Oh, all right, Dan raised his hand first. Dan first, go ahead.
Okay, as you see over my shoulder, I love flying on the weekends.
Nice. Okay. All right, so what is one thing you could do with flying during the week?
It's tough because we only operate the club on the weekend.
Okay, is there anything that you believe that you can do daily? Like, maybe it's not flying, but is there anything you can do daily?
No, I think that would probably flip over to more of one of my other items, and, uh, You know, I like providing solutions to challenges. A lot of people, people come to me and said, hey, I got an issue. What can I do? How do we work through it? So I kind of like the brainstorming aspect of that. So I've kind of been the go-to guy for various environments to come to. So I kind of like that. And we work something out through solutions. Very gratifying to me.
I love it. Okay, very good. Who would like to go on that? Raise your hand or unmute.
I'll go next.
There he is, Mr. Miller. How are you, sir? Good, how are you? I like to go, uh, every night take a walk with my wife or my kids. Love it. Get some fresh air, hang out with the kiddos. Very good. Kenny? Yeah, mine was gonna be, uh, spend more time with the girls and then, uh, alone time. I just never have enough alone time. There's no such thing as alone time in my household. Been there. Uh, Michael Zucker? I really like, uh, cooking and trying out new recipes, which I can definitely do daily. Oh, you and, you and, uh, Steve, Steve Carney, you guys will be cooking during the masterminds.
Kevin.
Enjoy gardening and landscaping. Love it. Kevin the gardener. I can see you in those garden gloves.
John.
Patrick. I love to work out and I haven't been doing it and I need to get back to it.
Love it.
Very good. Does anybody else like to share? I don't want to close it down if anybody else wants to share. I like working with clay. It's a big stress reliever. Oh yeah, that's right. That's right. Very good. Okay, everyone, I want you guys to pull up your calendar because I told you this needs to be done 20% of the time daily. So when you get on the phone with Mike and you say, I'm burnt out, I'm stressed out, and Mike says, are you doing You're what you love 20% of the time, and you say no. Mike's gonna be like, "Well, this was important. This is important for your mental health. Extremely important." My wife tells me this stuff all the time. This is why I want to bring it to you guys. This is what I love about masterminds and speaking. It's I get to talk to myself, to you guys, and the importance of really understanding that you're doing something daily that you love. Surprisingly enough, like you're gonna, you're gonna be hesitant. I can tell you this. You're gonna be hesitant. You're gonna say, I don't have enough time in the day, right? Because I already got all these other things going on. You can be hesitant to take away that time in order to do something you love. And at first, when you're doing something you love, you're gonna be like, well, I should be doing this, right? A major piece of advice that a mentor of mine Uh, acquaintance of mine said to me, said, Zach, if you have big dreams and big goals, then here's the thing. When you're with your family, be with your family. Don't wish you were working. And when you're working, don't wish you were with your family. Same thing here. When you're doing something you love, enjoy doing it, whether it's family or fitness or an activity or it's brainstorming, mastermind connecting. Don't wish you were doing something else, because the idea of this 20% is going to fuel the rest of it. It's going to fuel everything else, which is so important. Here's why: it's not about the amount of time you spend doing something; it's about how effective you are while you're doing that thing. Right? If you said to me, I need to make 100 dials. I'd be like, okay, 100 dials, good idea, good output. That's something you control. But what's the real goal? The real goal is I need 5 leads. Okay, great. Well, imagine if you could make 10 calls and get 5 leads. I would say you accomplished that goal, right? So the more effective we are during that time frame, and I'm telling you, trust me with this, that if you're in a, if you're in a more focused, positive energy because you're coming off of something that you enjoy doing, Or you get to look forward to doing that thing you love, it's gonna make you more effective during the day. It's gonna make you more effective at your business. It's gonna make you more effective with your family. Can everybody agree with that?
Okay.
