In this coaching segment, Chris Prefontaine guides participant Rick through a structured process of clarifying and deepening his personal "why"—the motivation to replace his wife's $100,000 annual income so she can retire and they can enjoy life together. Chris first confirms the core why (repaying his wife's hard work) and quantifies the financial target. He then introduces practical tactics for keeping the why top‑of‑mind, such as writing it on index cards and placing them in high‑frequency locations (pocket, car speedometer, computer screen) for constant exposure. The conversation moves into visualization, prompting Rick to imagine the concrete changes in daily life, budget, and relationships once the goal is achieved. Chris emphasizes that this mental rehearsal, combined with daily habit alignment (budget planning, time together), creates a mindset that attracts the desired outcome. Throughout, the coach stresses that mindset shifts require ongoing, disciplined effort—much like regular physical training—rather than a one‑time affirmation.

You're X amount of years old. We all are, right? Well, it took you X amount of years to get here. It's not gonna be like, boom, I got this goal and then my mindset's changed tomorrow and I'm all set 'cause I wrote my why down. It's gonna be constant work, like working out. Rick, let's start with, um, I don't know if you have it written or if it's all notes. Let's start with your why the way you have it, and then we can dive deeper. Hey, Dave.
Uh, well, um, I started with my wife 'cause that's my biggest why. She's been working her job for quite a long time, and frankly, it's wearing on her. So my why is really just to get enough so I can replace her income to retire her and then to retire myself so that I can enjoy it with her.
Replace income to retire, right? I do remember that with your why. Replace income to retire for your wife and then you secondarily. Why? So let's just start digging, which you've done some of this. Why? Let's talk about that first. Why is that important? Like, why?
Well, I love her for one thing, but, um, that's the obvious one. Um, she's been working for a long time and she'll do anything for me, and she's working 2 jobs right now to try to help sustain what we've got going on with the business and with everything else going on. So I, I kind of feel a little bit of a repayment is in place.
Sweet. Um, so what is— have you guys sat down yet and revisited what that will look like once you do it, and then exactly how much it takes to do it? And then I'll go deeper.
No, we have not. Um, I just know to get her retired, it would be just under $100,000. So I'm just keeping it $100,000 just to, um, keep the number simple.
Okay, I like that. From— so guys, we tend to combine goals and why, right? So right now we're kind of going metrics, goals, and then we'll go back and forth to the why because it's It's helpful, especially if Rick, if that's his main focus. So Rick, $100K, good. So that should be everywhere, like index cards, sticky notes, affirming it. Like, that needs to be hitting you every day multiple times. So for me, it's, um, the best one I've found— I've played with a bunch— is an index card that gets tucked in the same pocket where I have my money clip, because I'm, I'm touching it at least twice a day, if not more. I'm touching it to put it in my pocket and to take it out, and I have to read it. So that's 2. And then if you have one on your computer screen, or I do a lot with— I'll put an index card where my speedometer is in my car or truck. So again, it's just constant exposure. You're X amount of years old. We all are, right? Well, it took you X amount of years to get here. It's not gonna be like, boom, I got this goal and my mindset's changed tomorrow and I'm all set because I wrote my why down. It's gonna be constant work, like working out. Yep, yep, yep, yep.
Constant.
So that's just one exposure thing. And then, so that's just a metric. So then I go back to the why and say, yeah, you guys should sit and— well, some people are visual, some people, you know, audio, but whatever works for you guys— and figure out how cool it's gonna be. 100's done. You did it. It's everywhere. You got exposure to it. So you're gonna accomplish that. Now, how cool is it gonna be? What's it gonna look like when that's done? How are the days gonna change? How are you both— it's gonna be different answers— feeling now that that's done? Like, you gotta get in that mindset because then you'll attract it. That makes sense?
Yes, I'm just jotting it down.
That's like a cool brainstorm. Like, all right, let's just pretend we're there right now, right today. Like, I do it driving in sometimes in some of mine. I'll be driving into the office and I'll just be starting a bit and I'll get lost in it on a positive note. Like, oh, it feels really cool. And if you start doing it, it's like working out or anything, any other discipline. Steve's a black belt. Like, it builds upon itself and it gets easier and easier and you start seeing it more and more clear. And all of a sudden people and things start showing up and you're like, how'd that happen? Well, it's because you've been immersing yourself with the thought for a year or whatever it's going to take. So I'd go, I'd go, and that's only one level past what we just talked about, but I'd go with how's that going to feel and what's our day going to look like and Who cares? Like, why is that important?
No, I see why it's important, because you want to get that visual in your head to move you forward. Yeah, that makes sense.
Just some— like, that's just one level deeper on yours. Um, same with yours, but you get— but let's— I don't say you have to. Let's get through that exercise first, because you gotta, like, you Like your body and energetically has to digest that and start accepting that as the norm. And then you guys can go, cool, maybe a month or two now go deeper on yours. Just keep digging. Because now you're talking an entirely different lifestyle. Entirely different. Like I'd go right down to, uh, in the first tier with your wife, I'd go right down to, uh, what the budget looks like, what your day looks like, where you guys are spending more time together. How's that feel? I don't know who else in your family that might affect. I would imagine it might give you guys both time to do other things with family. I don't know. Um, so you— so just keep digging how that feels and who else it'll affect and why.
