Why Focus Matters More Than Motivation

Focus beats motivation for long-term success. Brendon Burchard identified it as one of the top six habits of high performers. Physical health, clear goals, and consistent systems matter more than short bursts of motivation.

The number one determination between you reaching your goals and you falling short is nothing other than a simple five-letter word: focus.
Now, if you're anything like me, you've heard your teacher growing up constantly repeating to you, Zach, you need to focus.
Zach, you need to pay attention.
So I honestly thought growing up that focus was a very challenging thing for me.
I always thought that I actually couldn't focus and that I wasn't going to be able to reach the goals that I truly wanted.
But what I discovered is, as I got older and I started to find things that I was truly passionate about, things that I really cared about, I found that it was extremely easy to focus. But see, focus is a superpower. It is something that keeps you on track. It keeps you hungry.
It keeps you pushing forward when things don't always seem to be going in the right direction. Because this superpower is such a determination of success, I want to share with you how to be able to hone this in, because Brendon Burchard actually labeled focus as one of the top 6 habits when it comes to a successful high-performing person.
And it starts with this: focus truly starts with planning. How do you know if you're actually focused unless you are, number one, creating a goal in which you're trying to accomplish, and then number two, creating a plan in order to reach that goal? Think about planning as bowling. See, I recently brought my mother, my family, my kids To the bowling alley to celebrate her 70th birthday.
Yeah, I can't believe she's 70 years old.
But what we did is because we had young kids, what do we do? We put up those bumpers. Now, bumpers are signifying plan, because if we don't consistently plan, then how do we know how to get back on track? So start with planning. Planning will increase your focus to an entire other level.
And keep you on track in order to get there. Secondly, when it comes to focus, it is extremely hard to focus if we don't feel good, both mentally, emotionally, and physically. I know I've been in many different scenarios when I am tired, unhealthy, and it is extremely hard to focus consistently and to be able to put in the effort and the concentration that it takes to reach that goal.
So here's a couple of different places that you can focus on in order to increase your health, your longevity, your mind. Encourage you to meditate. Now, I am not a huge meditator, and I mean that in the normal sense of meditation. Like, I don't always find time to be able to go sit in a quiet place, close my eyes.
I can honestly barely do the crisscross applesauce. So you're not going to find me there.
My form of meditation comes in a couple of different ways.
It comes in Long walks in the woods. Meditation to me and meditation to you can simply just being a place to give your mind and time the ability to process and decompress.
Second thing to increase focus is exercise. I can tell you the better that I feel and the more I exercise, you know, of course within reason, the more energy I have and the more ability I have to focus on what's—
what matters to me.
And of course, what goes along with exercise is diet. I don't mean in the sense of fad diets. I mean in feeding your body good food. See, I grew up in an environment where snacks and sugary items and things that came out of boxes or things that went into microwaves were what we ate on a consistent basis.
What I didn't realize was until I got older and I started eating healthy vegetables, protein, that it directly changed my ability to increase my energy and to focus. And then of course, the number one thing that most of us struggle with is sleep.
I have been there so many times where I had a terrible night's sleep, had to wake up really early and was in a fog.
Now that fog eliminates the ability to focus. So by simply having a focus on yourself, of meditation, exercise, diet, and sleep, you will see a dramatic increase in your ability to perform as an individual, both in your personal life and your professional life, to reach your goals.
Another really cool thing that you can use, and it's a thing that can get you moving but certainly won't keep you moving, and that's motivation. See, I know you're listening to a Motivational Monday right now, but motivation is simply a jumpstart, a kickstart per se, something that gets you moving. But motivation only gets you so far.
It's habits that move you forward. The habit of doing things consistently that builds results, that increases your ability to focus, that increases confidence is what eventually leads to long-term success.
And those habits are really just systems, right? Systems that create consistency. Systems such as planning on a weekly basis.
Systems as eating the right food. Systems as showing up on time consistently to the job, to the business that you're currently building. Systems that help the Other people around you find success as well. Systems create that consistency, and that, that consistency is what creates long-term results.
Because see, focus is really the foundation of everything.
You have focus. Focus leads to execution.
Execution leads to confidence.
Confidence leads to results. Now, I know just like me, you want results. Focus is something that is going to take consistent work. Over and over and over again. But that focus is what creates that laser beam effect where eventually you get to a point where you look back and all of your hopes and dreams are there and you're living in the reality that you hoped for.
