Short coaching video (Christian Polk) advising salespeople on handling emotionally guarded prospects—especially married couples—during discovery. Core technique: engage the more open partner first, elicit an emotional response, then "bounce" that response to the quieter partner to encourage them to open up (described metaphorically as using emotion as a "crowbar"). The speaker also offers a broad gendered generalization that women are often more emotionally open in these contexts.

If you do notice somebody's body language or somebody is being a little bit guarded, you're going to want to bounce off of them after you get the person who's more open to talk. Example, I know we really want to do this, but blah, blah, blah. Okay, yeah, we can talk about that. But for you, like, why do you really want to do this? Because, again, everyone's a little bit different. And you, John, like, how do you feel about it? Are you on the same page or what are your thoughts? Just, again, so I can understand where you're coming from. Oh, yeah, right. Like, get him to start talking after she just talks it up that way. Again, he's much more likely to say something positive after she just spoke. This is also really important when you're into discovery. You know, you got a man, you got a woman. Generally speaking, the woman is going to be the one who's more open. Not always the case, but the one who's more open. The one that's like, you're able to actually get deeper into the emotion. You. Once you always get to those high emotional points, you always want to bounce it off to the other person. It's like, okay, well, how does it make you feel? And they're like, just terrible. The other person's just chilling there. You're gonna go, okay. And John, like, how does that make you feel, knowing that she's having to go through that right now? He just saw, like, his wife, like, really get emotional. It's gonna be very hard for him to be like, what's the point of these questions? Right? Like, that'd be weird to be socially awkward. Yeah, he's gonna be more likely to open up emotionally. So what you want to do is you always want to dive into the person who's more open and then bounce off of them to the person who is less open, basically as a crowbar to get that person to be more open.
