"I need to pray about it." vs. $8M Closer

Christian Polk discusses an $8,000 investment with someone who wants to pray about it first. He uses the Parable of the Talents to argue that fear is unavoidable, but prayer doesn't eliminate it. You have to decide to act anyway, using the gifts you've been given.

Yeah, so the investment is going to be $8,000.
I'm religious. I really need to pray about something like this. So give me the weekend to just do that, please.
I'm religious too, right? So we're in the same boat. When you do go and you pray about it, if we have like a better understanding of like what we're really hoping or illuminating going into it, probably get better results from it. What do you actually need to go over or pray about specifically? Just to see if I can help.
It's not really something you can help with. It's just like my relationship with God and I just want to have assurance. Confirmation.
How do you know you're going to get that insurance?
I don't know, maybe God will give me a way or something.
We like to hope, but has God ever worked in your life in mysterious ways that weren't so obvious when you first started to look at it? Maybe in the moment, but in the moment it's tough. It's always going to be tough in the moment. It reminds me of a, a parable from the Bible. Have you heard like the parable of the talents, or have you read about that?
Just a summary of it.
So it's like basically this lord was going away, he had talents of gold that he gave 3 different people. And he told them to hold on to it while he was away. And so one of them with the talents went ahead and they invested it and it like tripled the money. The second one, they invested like half of it and they just like doubled the money. The third one, do you know what he did?
No.
Because he was scared to lose it, he buried the talents, he buried the gold, and he didn't get anything in return. And what it said is God punished him because he didn't use his gifts. Now, God didn't go out and tell him like, hey, you need to use your gifts. It's inherent just from the fact that he gave you life. If we keep on waiting for a signal from God, when he gave us life, he gave us these gifts to actually make these decisions. Like, what happened if we never actually make the decision that we need to and actually use the talents that he gave us?
Wasting it.
Not good. Well, do you want to waste it?
No.
Why would you say that?
I know I can help people, but if they offer a lot, it's changed lives. It's like, fine, but guess I am a little bit fearful here.
That fear, it's exactly what you're supposed to feel. Because if you're over there like cool as a cucumber, dude, like, I would have to check your pulse. You get what I mean? Because who do you know who grows inside their comfort zone? Nobody. You're a human being at the end end of the day, really, this feeling, it's not going to go away. And no amount of like praying or contemplating is actually going to make this feeling go away. The only thing that we can do with this feeling now that we have it is like we just got to decide how we deal with it. The first option is we get this feeling and we allow it to constrict us, like we bury the talents. And some people do that their entire life and they don't get anywhere. Second option is we get this feeling like those other two people who did invest. They had that same feeling, but they did it regardless. They put some skin in the game and they made it work. So which person would you rather be?
The guy that makes it work.
Why?
God's already gave me the skin. I trust him.
What if we marry him? What happens then?
I don't know if I'm gonna get punished, but it's just not good for me. What do you mean?
Is that something we're willing to allow to happen?
No.
So what do we need to do to make sure when we go to bed tonight we're doing everything in our power to actually use the talents that we're given?
