Christian Polk coaches someone who wants to ask his wife before joining a business program. Polk reframes it: is family an excuse or your reason to invest? They land on a $2,500 monthly split so he can start now.

Money for kids' Christmas gifts
Now just gonna run about the wife and welcome your roommate.
Cool, man. Just so I can make sure I send you the most relevant information. What's that conversation between you and the wife gonna be mostly about?
Christmas is coming up and obviously we want to make sure we have money for some kids gifts.
Because if you just put money aside for a second, is this something you'd even want to do? Yeah, why would you?
It's obviously good to always sharpen your skills and I think it's something productive to do ultimately.
Who are you looking to make the money for? Because that doesn't sound like it's more for yourself.
No, it's not a secret. Too much. Everybody.
Can I be super straightforward with you without you getting upset at me? They can't be both. They can't be the reason you need to do this. You need to move forward. You need to invest in yourself. And they can't also be your excuse of why you can't. We have to choose. Either there are excuse on why we can't invest in ourselves or there are a reason why we must. They can't be both. So which one are you going to allow them to be? Definitely have that conversation. But it's still going to come down to the big question we have to ask and it needs an answer. Are they going to be an excuse or are they going to be the reason? If you had to give an answer, why do you want them to be the reason to?
My family's my biggest motivator.
It's like, dude, I can appreciate that sitting over here, got a newborn downstairs, chilling with my wife. My family's my motivator too. So everything I do, I do it for them. We can figure the money out. The hard part is just you committing to do whatever it takes for them because they are the reason. So are you actually committed to give them that better life despite what it takes?
Yeah.
Let's not focus on what we can't do. Let's just focus on what we can do. Let's just focus on what's in front of us and what we can do. So bills, expenses aside, so that way again, we're not. Take the light out of the fridge. You're not having to go out on the street. Like, what can you actually do?
Yeah, Christian, I appreciate that. I just don't make decisions about my wife on this.
Yeah, it's like. And again, it doesn't even make much sense to have that conversation if we can't really figure out the numbers, man. So it's like, what do you know you can work with? And then we can work backwards from there. We can make 2500 work. We can split it up to where it's like, we do it monthly. That way we're not in a tough spot. And then once you start making more, you would pay the rest of it off. Do you think that would actually work for you? But it's like, ultimately, do you feel like she trusts you to make decisions, like about your business yourself, you know, by yourself?
Yeah, I think she does.
Okay, so then, if she does trust you to make the best decision, what would stop you from going ahead and doing that?
Just worried that it's not gonna work out. We go in the hole and just focus on a tough spot.
But it comes down to ultimately, who has to make the tough decision, and who is that gonna really be on at the end of the day?
Me.
Do you feel like she trusts you to make the decision that you think is best without her?
I bet she would.
So if you think she would, the next step is pretty straightforward. We'd go ahead, we take down the 2,500, get you in the program. That way you can start making more right away. The money is not important. The only important thing right now is just a commitment to change. So are you actually committed?
I am.
What do we need to do?
Let's do it.
