If You Think Knowledge Is Expensive, Try Ignorance

Myron Golden bought a used Bentley in 2017 and ignored a mechanic's advice to replace the batteries. The engine fried and repairs cost far more than the preventive work would have. He compares this to students who paid for coaching and made back the investment many times over.

Hey there, YouTube. Myron golden here. And today I want to talk to you about the high cost of not knowing.
Here we go.
You see, I got where I am because I want reach out of hand. Help me to stand being independent, man.
It's really interesting how sometimes we, we know things, we don't know things. And I found there are two reasons for not knowing. There's one. One reason we don't know is because we just don't know. Maybe we haven't learned it yet, maybe we haven't. Maybe we haven't found out about it yet. Maybe we haven't read about it yet. Maybe we haven't been coaching it yet. So one reason for not knowing is don't know. The other reason for not knowing is won't know. And that's when you had the opportunity to know, but you didn't listen to the person who did know. And when they told you, you just didn't do what they said. And so, interestingly enough, one of the, one of the most valuable lessons I've ever learned is also one of the most expensive lessons I've ever learned. And that is, it's always going to make you give you a whole lot more peace and save you a lot of money if you learn to listen to the experts. Like, so first of all, and another thing too is, is to make sure you're operating more from future focus than past focus. So what does all that mean? So back in 2017.
I was, I started accumulating bitcoin and we accumulated like a whole bunch of bitcoin. Okay, so that was cool. So I said, well, you know what, I'm going to reward myself. I'm going to give myself a car. So I bought, I bought a Bentley. But I should have, like, I should have researched it first. So I bought, I bought a used Bentley with a lot of miles that needed stuff done to it. So I had to get it painted. And like, and so that's the kind of stuff I used to do back, back in my broke days, right? I'd, I'd find something, I'd buy it, I'd fix it up, I'd make it better, and then, you know, I had it right? And like, I, I have no idea what came over me. But anyway, I did that. I bought this car. So, and I got it painted, I got all this stuff done to it. I got the passenger side window didn't work when I bought it. Got that fixed. And like, this thing is like. And don't even think about taking it to the Bentley. Dealership. We're talking about. We're talking about. Just because you took it to a Bentley dealership, when you go in there, if you want to leave it there and come back and pick it up, worst case scenario, it's $1,600. Yeah. Can you fix this ashtray? Yeah. $1,600. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter what it is. Anyway, so I found him. The Bentley dealership that I was going to was. They just were not on. They were not on point at all. They were like. They were. They were. They were just incompetent. I don't. I like, how can you have a Bentley dealership and have your service people be incompetent? The service advisors are incompetent. The service technicians are incompetent. You take it in to do something, you come back, you pick it up, and the thing you took it in to do is not done, right? Okay, cool. So I found a guy who works on imports, and he also works on Bentleys and Rolls and all this other stuff. And he's in Clearwater. And the dude did a great job. Everything he did, like, every time he took my car and he fixed it, it was fixed, right? It was fixed, right. I was like, okay, I got me a dude who can fix my Bentley, right? And so I take it in one day, and I had. I had replaced all the stuff on. I had replaced both batteries because it has an auxiliary battery. Main battery. I had replaced the window light. Window, like I said. I got it painted. I gotten it ceramic, like, the whole nine yards, right? Oh, I bought new wheels. You know, you got. You can't get a Bentley in the night. You get new wheels, right? Custom wheels. And anyway, so I did all of that stuff, and so I take my car into the shop one day, and Roger, the guy who owns the. The. The place where I take it to get it. Service to import. Rio. Rio. Rio imports, I think is the name of it, anyway. Rio import repair or something like that. Anyway, in Clearwater, the guy does great work, and he says to me, and Roger, if you ever see this, my apologies in advance for putting you on blast like this. But he says to me, he says, yeah, I tested the batteries. You need. You need new batteries. And I thought to myself, I just replaced the batteries last year. I can't possibly need new batteries, right? And I said, okay, well, I'll take that under advisement. And I didn't get the batteries. I'm like, whatever. The batteries are fine. You know how we do? We're like, oh, he's just trying to make another sale. He just wants to do a little bit more work. And I kind of, I didn't think that about him as a person, but I kind of just, you know, that thought just kind of subconsciously seeped in and I didn't buy the battery. So lo and behold, a couple weeks later, we're on our way to do an event. I'm driving my other car. My brother Rob is driving my Bentley. He's driving my Bentley and it overheats on the interstate. And you gotta understand this is a 12 cylinder engine. This thing like it runs like the normal. You know how water boils at 212 degrees. This car, most cars run about, I think 160 degrees. This car runs about 180 to 200 degrees. Like 12 degrees away from boiling all the time. It's got a 12 cylinder range. It's crazy. So it went from engines overheating, steam's coming out, to pulling it over to the side of the road and the engine is fried.
So I take it in. Roger, my, my car, my. Can you change the engine? So now I got to find an engine. He's got to find an engine. Then he's got to change the engine and this Bentley because now I've got all this money in it. I'm not going to just like, it's a Bentley, surely. I gotta like, I gotta. Ah, right. And so, so I take it in, he changes the engine. He shows me the other engine. It looks like just melted, all this melted plastic on it. It was terrible, right? And so he changed the engine. I'm like, okay, so how is it ready to go? He said, well, it's almost ready to go, but there's a problem. You need a new auxiliary fan. Okay, how much is that gonna be? It's gonna be $6,000. $6,000. I just paid 21, 000 for this engine to have this eng dollars for the engine and to have the engine replaced. Yeah, yeah. I said, okay, man, I don't know. I can't even think about this right now. I was like, I was so done. And it wasn't because I didn't have the money. It was just like more money on this stupid car. I'm so over it anyway. So I just waited a couple of days, just like let it settle. I don't know if you've ever done that or not. I just waited a couple days, let it settle. And then I said, I said, okay, Roger. And there was something else wrong with it. I Don't remember what the other thing was, but I called him back. He said, well, I've got some good news for you. You don't need a new auxiliary fan. Why? What happened? He said, well, I changed the auxiliary battery and the fan started working.
I said, oh, okay, cool. How much the auxiliary battery? Oh, 600 bucks. Okay, cool. Change. The auxiliary battery starts working. And then I went to pick up the car, and it hit me.
The auxiliary fan wasn't working, which means the car is not going to cool because the auxiliary fan cools off the engine. The auxiliary fan wasn't working. Car's not going to cool, so the engine's going to blow. And he changed the battery, and the auxiliary fan started working. So I go back in, I said, roger, I think I just put two and two together. Are you telling me that the reason the engine blew in this car is because of a $600 battery? He said, that's what it seems like. I was like, I will never, ever ignore the advice of an expert again. I don't care if they are just trying to get money out of me, right? Because not only did he get $600 for the battery.
He got $21,000. I'm sure some of it with the engine was probably 15,000 of that, right? And so I ended up flushing all of this money down the toilet because I didn't listen to the expert. And that's why, like, I'm so passionate about always having a coach. I'm passionate about listening to your teachers, like young people listen to your parents, like students listen to your teacher, like, find somebody who knows something. And when they give you advice, if they're an expert, trust them more than you trust yourself. And I have found in my life.
The shortcut to anything you desire in life is to find somebody who's producing the result you want to produce. Pay them whatever they charge, and then do everything they say and trust their advice, especially when it's counter. Counterintuitive to your own. And when I think about that, and I think about me not listening, right, to the advice of this expert who clearly told me, like, you need to change the batteries. Whatever, okay, whatever. I used to work on cars. I just changed these batteries last year. I don't need to listen to you. I want to. I want to challenge you, make sure you don't let what you know keep you from learning what you don't know, because that's where a lot of people live. And so, anyway, I was thinking about that in comparison to some of my students, so I was thinking about Josh and Wasi and everything. Like, May of 2021, they came to our make more offers challenge, and they took the challenge, which is. It's not expensive. It was like $297. So they took the challenge, and then at the end, I offered them a coaching program, and they were hesitant. They were like, I don't know. We. We just had our worst month ever. We only did 10,000. So. Well, if you want to take it to another level, you know, this is your opportunity. So instead of them doing what was comfortable, instead of them doing what was easy, they bought the coaching program that I offered them, which is tens of thousands of dollars. It was a lot. I mean, for them, because they only made $10,000 a month before. It was way more than they made that month. Okay? So I said, yeah, you need to do this. So they bought the coaching program. They started applying the principles that they learned. The next month, they did $60,000 in revenue. The month after that, they did 101,000. The month after that, they DID 150,000. Back in March or February or March of this year, they had one day where they did $860,000 in revenue in one day. So all of that to say this.
When you find somebody who knows what you want to know, pay them what they charge and do everything they say. Trust their judgment more than you trust yours. Don't be a chucklehead like I was who didn't trust the expert. And I ended up letting a $600 battery cost me $21,600. All right, stay blessed by the best. Like the video.
