It's Not About Winning or Losing—It's About Momentum

Always time, for example, stuff like that. And nowhere on the scorecard did it say whether the Marines made it to the other side or not. Nowhere on the scorecard did it say if they succeeded or failed. So I asked one of the drill instructors, how come you don't care if they succeed or not? And he said, we understand that sometimes good leaders suffer mission failure and sometimes bad leaders enjoy mission success. So whether somebody succeeded or failed doesn't help us understand if they're good leaders or not. I said, then how do you know if they're good leaders? And they responded, if they exhibit the qualities of good leaders. And what they know is that leaders that exhibit the qualities of good leaders are more likely to succeed more often over time than not. And that's why we invest in good leadership. That's what it means to have an infinite mindset, which is it's not about each individual win or loss. It's about the momentum that we carry over time.
