Working late doesn't get you promoted. What matters is making your contributions visible to managers and peers. Putting in extra hours can actually make you look like you can't handle your workload, not like you're a hard worker.

It's a really important thing to know that working extra hours is not necessarily lead to being perceived as working harder. So if you can find ways to be more visibly contributing, because unfortunately the way you get promoted is being more visibly contributing versus necessarily working into the night when no one is there and no one's noticing.
