This short talk (YouTube video) by Codie Sanchez argues that pursuing personal success is not selfish because individual upward mobility can lift others around you. Using an analogy attributed to Don Dependi, she describes how personal growth pulls up family and friends over time through increased resources, hiring, and visible examples of possibility.

If you want to be successful. Those who don't want it as bad as you are never going to understand. They're going to wonder why you're spending time away from them, why you don't answer their text messages and phone calls. Your sacrifice, they're not going to get. But when I saw this simple example from this guy by the name of Don Dependi, it changed my perspective on that entirely. It's not selfish to go after success. And here's why. Think about it like this. You are in the middle of this tissue. And on each of the four corners is your mom, your dad, my, your brother, your best friend, or the people that matter most to you in life. As you have a pursuit of money and bettering yourself, you start to make more. In the middle, you start to lift yourself up like this. Now, at this point, all of your friends and family feel like they're getting left behind. But at a certain point, they are going to begin to realize that you lifting up lifts them up too. Because you can't be what you can't see. And when you make more money, you hire more people, you spend more, and you bring others along with you. So don't think that it's selfish to grow. Realize that you're lifting up a whole group of others with you.
