Does Your Appearance Affect Your Career?

Codie Sanchez argues appearance directly affects earnings, citing Harvard and Stanford research. She recommends uniforms, professional dress, and polished presentation over attractiveness. Window washers who look unkempt lose clients who won't invite them into their homes.

Talk to us about your belief and why it's important to invest in your physical appearance and how that impacts your performance. For the dudes in the room, this is for you too, by the way.
Here's the data. Whether you like it or not, the way you present yourself is actually going to make you more or less money. That's just the facts, statistically. And so if you want to make more money, one of the most important things you can do, uniform. Very first thing. Everybody on your team needs to have a uniform in the way that they dress. Second, you need to ask yourself, do I look like a pro or an amateur? Because if you want to get paid like a pro, you got to dress like one. And then the third thing is, unfortunately, good, bad, or otherwise, humans care a lot about symmetry. It's not necessarily are you hot or not, it's are you clean, do you look professional, and do you have some type of symmetry on the way that you look? And so there's multiple studies from Harvard and Stanford that both say that the way you look matters. If you want to be an owner, this is very important, but for every single one of your employees, really think long and hard on are you— when your window washers show up to the site, do they look like people that a single mom who has nobody else in the house wants to open the door to and let in? And let's be honest, what's your answer often? No! You're like, this guy's got his stomach out because one of the buttons is missing, there's a stain on it, he has tattoos of a tarantula on his forearm, get the fuck out of here! And so that's way more important you look like a pro than you have to be hot. Although if you have an option, take both.
