A short advisory YouTube talk by Codie Sanchez on how to identify and hire 'A' players. Key criteria highlighted: a demonstrated history of success (a "wall of medals"), demonstrated leadership ability (people who will recruit/bring others), and intense personal obsession/passion for something (self-motivated long working sessions). Emphasis is on hiring proven winners and leaders rather than unproven candidates.

How do you hire people? How do you look for the A players? We have a list of characteristics for A players that we hire, and a couple of them are things like this. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. So we want a history of winning. I call this a wall of medals. You don't actually want to bet on somebody who has bumble fucked their way through life today. Let them get a few wins under their belt, and then hire them. We also want shepherds, not she. And so the best hires are people where you go, amazing, Graham, we want to hire you. Who else would you bring? And if they go, oh, I don't know, that means they're not a leader. And so you want to people who are already going to bring your next couple of people. The last thing that I think is really important is obsessed people will always beat interested people. And so we hire people who are obsessed with something. Doesn't have to be what we're talking about, but I always talk to them about, like, what is the thing that you can't stop doing even if you try? When was the last time you stayed up almost all night working on something because you chose to, not because you had to? And I want to find the people who had that.
