Codie Sanchez explains the "near exposure effect": repeated exposure to people or behaviors increases familiarity and liking, which causes people to adopt others' habits (positive or negative). She recommends deliberately exposing yourself to behaviors you want to adopt, because increased exposure will make you like and do them more.

You ever noticed how when you're around other people, you drink more? This is called the near exposure effect. The more you are repeatedly exposed to something, the more you get familiar with it and the more you like it. Which is why when you're around people that are drinking or doing negative habits, it turns out you do more of those things. When you're around people who are doing healthy or positive habits, you do more of those things too, and you like it. So you just have to be careful about what you get exposed to and maybe try to just expose yourself more to things that you don't like now, but you wish you did, because the near exposure effect will help you out with it.
