This is how A company makes $500 million a year by drawing doodles. They're called the Smiley Company, and they trademarked this yellow smiley face we all know and love, then did licensing deals with everyone. You can think of Franklin in Paris in the 70s. He drew the smiley face, then went around to brands and pitched his logo on their products. This was a new model that then became really prolific. Move it behind a cultural movement and brands want the coolness to rub off on them. Licensing deals are one of my favorite types of business models because it's essentially like real estate, real renting, but you are renting out your ideas for a percentage of sales. So here's how it works. You draw a doodle, AKA yell Smiley, you patent it at the trademark office, then you get royalty fees, AKA a percentage of every dollar a company makes when they use your image. Like Lee Jeans did with this or Dunkin Donuts here. So every time Dunkin Donuts sells a donut, they have to pay the Smiley company a percentage. That's how they do $500 million a year, higher ROI and other people to do the work.
