When COVID shut down his business, the speaker realized it depended entirely on him. He pivoted to acquiring and merging companies into a portfolio that could run without his constant involvement, and ditched the self-promoting personal brand that no longer served him.
Covid was heart wrenching for me. It ripped the heart out of my business and made me really think. And one of the big pieces I took away from COVID is that my business was purely reliant on me. I then started to look at how can I shift that where I can buy businesses and acquire businesses that aren't reliant on me. So now, through mergers and acquisitions, I now have companies that are growing independent of me. But during COVID I watch it. Before COVID I had this personal brand, egotistical, super awesome. Guess what? It didn't serve me. Covid was the best thing that ever happened to me. I'm sincerely grateful for it. At the moment, though, I was not grateful, I can tell you that.
