A founder worked 80-hour weeks and watched revenue shrink instead of grow. He argues that hard work alone doesn't build a business, and that you need to measure results monthly and ask whether your daily work actually moves the needle on what matters.
Chapters
The one year I worked 80 hours a week, and at the end of the year, I actually had shrunk my revenues. This sounds fascinating. It probably fascinates you too. But here's what I'm gonna share with you. Hard work does not build a business. Most people think working hard will eventually get you there. That's the biggest myth in business. What I found out is you need to step back sometimes when you're working hard and ask yourself the question, is the hard work I'm doing getting me to the goal I want to get to? I worked 80 hours a week to go nowhere. In fact, I went backwards. And one of the things I want you to think about, what are you doing right now in your business? What are are you working on? Are you working really hard to go nowhere, even potentially go backwards like I did? Or are you getting focused every single month on the result that you're looking at, the result that you want, and the result to where you are going? Never stop asking yourself, am I growing? What I'm doing right now, is it getting me to the result where I want to be in terms of revenue, profitability, in terms of all your metrics? Otherwise, if you're not measuring it and you don't know you're going forward, you might just be going backwards. And don't be surprised the way I was.
