Most business meetings lack agendas and clear outcomes, turning them into unstructured time-wasters that spawn more meetings about the previous meeting. Demand an agenda and a decision goal before you attend anything, and watch meetings shrink and work actually happen.

Most meetings in your business are expensive group therapy sessions and not productivity sessions that you think they're meant to be. I have been through all my companies, thousands and thousands of meetings, and I hear people call meetings all the time. We need to have a meeting. We need to have a meeting. And these meetings get called. There's no agenda. There's no structure. And then eventually at the end of a 45 or an hour-long meeting, the only decision you make though before you leave the room, let's have another meeting to discuss that meeting. I say this to all my team. If you want to have a meeting with me, I want to see the agenda before. I want to understand what the meeting's about and what's the outcome we're looking for. What is the decision that needs to be made in order to make sure we get the result that we're looking for? Otherwise, you'll live from this meeting to meeting to meeting situation. Just burn time, burn people's hours, and those hours are hours where they're not being productive for you. They might be productive in the meeting, but I can tell you one thing, they're way more productive out of the meeting doing what they need to do to drive the business forward. I'm going to ask you this very simply. Look at your calendar for the next week or two. What meetings do you have coming up? And ask yourself, is there an agenda for that meeting? If there's not an agenda for the meeting, write to that person immediately that's organized the meeting and say, I need an agenda. I want to know the outcome and I want to know the timeframe you're going to do it in, because that will then make your meetings shorter because you'll know what the context of each meeting is. It will help you run a way more effective and productive business in every way and form.
