Most hiring fails not because you're bad at it, but because you haven't defined what you actually need. Before you fill a vacancy, decide what work must be done (human, AI, or both) and identify three core character traits that match your culture, not just résumé skills.

You're not bad at hiring. You're bad at actually knowing what you need. Many business owners will have an employee resign, something happen, and all of a sudden they become reactive in the way they hire. They've got to fill that seat, get that person in, make sure they get the job done. But then they realize 3 months later, things are not working. The person doesn't have the values that they wanted. They might be able to get the job done, maybe if you're lucky, but at the end of the day, they don't fit the values that you all live by in your company. In fact, they could become cancerous to your organization, and all of a sudden some of your good people start to leave because of that person that you hired in a reactive state. And of course, we live in the AI era right now where a lot of people are like, I will just hire someone new. There's things you don't know around AI that you might be able to hire agents that can actually do the work all the time. They don't want vacation, they don't need time off, they don't need sick pay or anything like that because they just work for you all the time. You might think that's crazy, but a lot of entrepreneurs I get to meet are reactive in their hiring. When you become proactive and you sit back and think about what you truly need, it might be AI, it might not be another human, or it might not be either of those two. When you really get clear on what you are looking for, look at the 3 character traits that you're looking for outside of the resume that are important to you, that really govern the culture of your business before you hire anyone.
