AI systems hallucinate and remix content because society itself has lost shared facts and trades in nostalgia. The speaker traces this feedback loop back to Marshall McLuhan's idea that technology mirrors the culture that builds it.

I was reflecting on how today's AI systems kind of reflect our culture and our society at the moment. I mean, isn't it interesting that if we look around in our society, there's a general lack of grounding in factual reality or independent verification, and nobody's working with this, nobody's working with the same set of facts. So it's fascinating that our AI systems kind of reflect that, like they hallucinate and they don't really have factual grounding. Yeah. Reliability. So that's interesting, I think. I mean, it also reminds me that we live in this cultural age of nostalgia and pastiche. And in a way, our AI systems are essentially enormous mashup machines. So it's just, I guess what I'm trying to say here is, to paraphrase Marshall McLuhan, we shape our technology and it in turn shapes us. So there's this feedback loop going on. And I'm just fascinated by the way that AI seems to reflect the state of our world right now.
