Psychedelics reduce overall brain activity while making experience more vivid, suggesting the brain filters consciousness rather than creates it. Aldous Huxley called it a reducing valve. This challenges the idea that consciousness is purely physical.
Chapters
Did you know that brain scans of people on psychedelics show an overall decrease in brain activity compared to ordinary states of consciousness, despite having these extremely rich experiences where you would expect increased brain activity? This supports the idea that consciousness lies outside the brain. Aldous Huxley analogized the brain to a radio receiver for consciousness, describing it as a reducing valve for what he called Mind at Large. Huxley thought that we are always swimming in a vast sea of universal consciousness that would overwhelm us with the immensity of its infinite nature without this reducing function. Basically, like the examples of scientific anomalies that I outlined in my last video, I think this points to another gap in our understanding of consciousness and perhaps the need for a different worldview beyond physicalism or scientific materialism.
