Short YouTube clip by Caitlin Sarian (uploaded May 23, 2025) raising concern about AI data centers' water use — claiming they consume 125 million liters of water per year for cooling (equated to ~50 Olympic swimming pools) — and offering user-facing sustainability tips (avoid unnecessary prompts, optimize searches, support zero-water cooling tech such as Microsoft).
Every time you use AI, you're using water. A lot of water. But there's a way to be Smarter about it. AI data centers use 125 million liters of water per year just to stay cool. That's like draining 50 Olympic sized swimming pools per data set. Every time you ask ChatGPT a question or scroll through AI generated content, that's energy and keeping those servers from overheating. That's where all the water goes. So how can you make AI more sustainable? First, don't overload models with unnecessary prompts. Optimize your searches. The more precise you are, the less computing power you waste. Second is to support eco friendly tech. Companies like Microsoft are now using zero water cooling to cut waste. AI is changing fast, but so are the ways we use it responsibly.
