Early-stage startups waste money on marketing when their real problem is retention. If your product leaks users, adding more won't help. Fix what keeps people around first, then scale acquisition.

We focused way too early on the top of the funnel where we thought about, okay, do we need marketing? Do we need to put more people into the product? While actually our retention was very low, right? So now if I would do it again, always focus on the retention because you can pour as much water as you want into a leaking bucket. If the bucket is leaking, the water flows out again. So first you have to have a proper bucket and then put more and more water in it.
