UX Insider: Product Hunt's Weekly Roundup - Episode #6 (27 Jan. - 2 Feb. 2025)

In this YouTube episode, host Daniel Andor conducts a walkthrough-style UX review of five AI products featured on Product Hunt for the week of Jan 27–Feb 2, 2025. He systematically explores each product’s website and in‑app experience, noting UI inconsistencies, missing hover states, confusing navigation, onboarding friction, and unclear call‑to‑action placement. For AI Chat Avatar, he highlights a cluttered onboarding flow, ambiguous progress indicators, and inconsistent button styling, recommending clearer progress feedback and a guided walkthrough. Basedash receives praise for its clean visual design, responsive hover effects, and subtle motion cues. Codef is praised for its minimal onboarding but flagged for lack of guidance and unclear labeling of UI elements. Omakase AI is critiqued for missing hover states, confusing sidebar sections, and a non‑intuitive configuration flow. Scam AI’s clean design is noted, but the verification email process fails, and the lack of feedback hampers the sign‑up flow. Across all tools, Daniel emphasizes the need for standardized UI components, clearer onboarding, progress indicators, and better user guidance. He concludes by encouraging viewers to explore these products while keeping an eye on UX polish.
Chapters
Hi, Daniel here for another round of UX reviews of Product Hunt's top products of the week. Let's start with AI Chat Avatar, conversational AI assistant always ready to do the job for you. This is the website. There is a bunch of stuff opening straight from the beginning, the cookie consent and this thing on the side. Deny this one. Free webinar, don't care at this stage. This is grayed out for some reason, or it has a gray background. Not sure why, but at least the buttons have a hover state. Oh, it looks like that's selected for some reason. And we have login, request a demo, and a language switcher, which this language switcher is bigger than the other buttons that we have here. At least the font of it is bigger, but we don't have an option to create an account or start a trial or something like that. At least not in the navigation bar. Product Hunt badge. Small demo. Hi, I'm Fiona. I'm happy to introduce your AI chat avatar. I can be your— Looks a bit creepy for me. We have role-specific behavior, and I assume this is a screenshot from the app. And we have also the option to start a free trial, so we will do exactly that. 7-day trial. We have the social account login or filling in the form. Let's go with a Google account. Have to agree terms and privacy policy. And I assume this is a preview of what's happening in the app, some kind of animation for that. Okay, continue. Looks like it takes a bit. We are in the onboarding process. It looks like there are 3 steps. Let's see, which of the following best describes your role? Let's go with operations. Next, what is your company name? It's a bit weird that they just put it here. It could be like a dropdown, or it could be a selector, or they just could make this field as not being a requested field. Okay, domain. I'm just playing around for this now. Next. And we are in the product. We have 7 days trial remaining at the top. It's easy to spot. Minutes of AI avatar. I assume this is like 3 minutes. There is a video about how it works, but okay. And usually people don't really watch this kind of stuff and there are a bunch of them. So then we have presentations here and there is a popup. Okay. AI chat avatars here, share presentation. If we go to home and there is no obvious button. Where should I start? I assume these could be the ones, but no hover states on them. And it's quite easy to just not see them because it blends into the other one, which this isn't clickable, but this is clickable. And here we also have this, so we can create a new presentation or we can create a new folder. There's a lot of stuff going on and it can be slightly confusing. Honestly. Okay, let's go with a new presentation and we can upload one. Browse. We have browse here and upload here, but I can't upload anything since— so yeah, never mind. It could be that they can maybe just remove this. What's advanced setting? Doesn't it open on top instead of at the bottom? Okay. Also, we have YouTube, but didn't I select the presentation? Or they can create a presentation from YouTube. Okay. And there you can also start with a template, but the template is just blank. That's a bit confusing. Let's browse something and see how it goes. Generating those previews are, I assume, just like generic previews. Generates the message. And we have like 6 steps that we have to sit through. We are at 25%. It would be maybe helpful to know kind of how long this thing takes, or if I have to sit here and wait, or I can just leave and they are doing it in the background and maybe just email it over through a link or something once it's done. That would be helpful. Let's see what few more steps, but it still says 25%. That's, that's a bit confusing. We went through 4 steps almost, and it's still 25%. Step number 5, step number 6, still 25%. What now? Now it starts again. What happens if I close this? So I can close it. There is— okay, even this is a bit confusing. Usually the title, it's like the first thing that you see. It's not somewhere in the middle. And it's still, as you can see, 25%. We have a demo one here. Let's see how this looks. So, this is the demo. I can preview it. Okay. Okay, so this is basically a presentation. What can I do with this? We have read the script, full-length presentation. Link to the next slide. What? There is no button. Back to edit. Oh, I assume here is click for the next slide. Okay. It would be great to have maybe a walkthrough or something here in the beginning, guide you through all these steps. We have audio, we have avatar and text. Should I click generate? Let's see. Generate voiceover. Generate audio. Dorothy and her companions, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman. Is that not connected to the slides? I guess so. There is, I assume, a lot of stuff. Oh, this looks way off. And my stuff is still 25%, so we won't wait for that. You can also create an AI chat avatar. You can give them a name, voice. There are a few that you can select from. Hi, This is a voice sample of a cloned. Hi, this is a voice sample of a cloned. Even here they could just like voice being cloned. When I start the other one, they could either pause the first one or something, not just play it on top. You have an English which is just a list. Can I type in it? I cannot type in it, so it would be helpful if this would be searchable by type. And then there is a photo and we can select from a library. Okay, there are, there are quite a lot of them actually. Let's pick this one. Now you can take a photo. Next, there are avatar instructions. This is the Role, built-in behavior, built-in instructions, response, chat avatar instructions. Also here it might be helpful to have like some something like a guide. What's this? Oh, you can you can edit all those even here. Yeah, that's probably there are better options to to build this out because if you click on this, the edit doesn't open by default. So you have to click on on edit and then you have to go through all of these. But it's not obvious. So it would make sense to rethink it maybe as like you click on something or you add. Something and it opens, but like this it can be very confusing. Then we have the pitch content. Looks like mine is done now. Show all slides and ask questions. And knowledge source— something is loading. You can upload a knowledge source. Okay, but if you go back here and we delete this one, can we upload? Yeah, we can also upload here, but mine are 2 times here now for some reason. Okay, okay, and we can create it. Kind of the same problem. It's like we are waiting for something to happen, not knowing— oh, now it's here. Okay, and they can send it to my email, or you can personalize lead form and so on. Let's create it, see what— how, how this thing works. You have a link and the QR code. What if we copy this? And how I close this one? Because there is no X or something. I just click outside. Okay, and didn't I already create this? I have another create button now. And also test. What? This dude is not talking though. Hi, I'm your AI chat avatar demo. Let's chat and explore how I can transform your business interactions. I can handle everything from sales to support, and I'm here to show you exactly how it works. Probably I didn't set up something correctly, and create it just leads you here. And basically I would like to just get out of here, and I assume the only way to do that is Either clicking here, either clicking here. So let's go with this one. Okay, my presentation was uploaded. It's fine. We have links, all links. I don't know what's the difference between my links and all links, integrations and so on. It looks like the product, it's a bit all over the place and it makes it quite challenging to use. You can minimize the navigation bar. Some onboarding would definitely help. People usually don't watch these videos on how to actually use the product. So maybe guiding people through on how to use the product would be a better option. Also, probably merging some of the options here or hiding them would definitely help. And maybe having a button somewhere here to get things started or make these visible as options to get things started. But as it's displayed now, even challenging to figure out what should be your next step. Here you have, yeah, a new presentation and new, which is my AI chat avatar, which again, I don't know what's here. It's like, no, no, no. Maybe a preview or something would be great here. Also, the name should be, in my opinion, on the left side, not in the middle. And the same goes here for presentation title. You have it in the middle instead of being at the beginning. Usually people are used to have these titles at the, at the left side, not somewhere in the middle of the table. Company users. This could be under account settings or settings. External content. I'm not sure what's this. Even the buttons are not standardized. We have caps here. We have no caps here. The CTAs are different. Some standardization would also help. We also have a start guide, which is just video. Let's go to the next product. Basedash, the AI-native business intelligence platform. We have the website, join the beta on top, login. The website looks really nice actually. Nice visualization, hover states for all the— almost all of the buttons, at least the stuff that I tried so far, which is great. And, and also, does this thing move according to my mouse? Looks like, yeah, that's nice. Even this thing moves according to the mouse. Let's see if I try it out. Oh, you can just join the waitlist. The website looks nice. Oh, and these things that They show up as you hover on top. I didn't saw this one. This is a bit hidden. Once you select something, it's there. Somewhat similar to how Notion does navigation, which is nice, but maybe it would worth having, having it there. Maybe just the lines if, if they don't want to overcrowd the side. Definitely nice website. Okay, let's try something else. Codef, turn your ideas into full-stack apps. Text to app in minutes. Let's see, it's in beta. Community blog features hover states. Nice, at least we have hover states now. Select elements to make changes. So I assume they have a library. Text to app in minutes. It's powered by Claude. Get the badges from Product Hunt and, and Y Combinator to give some social proof. There is also a video. And there are a couple of tools that were built with Codev. Again, social proof and questions here. Let's see what they have here under the library. So there are some options to select navigation history. Okay, let's try this one out. So we are in the product. No onboarding. We are just straight here. We have new project on top, billing, logout. On the side, and that's it. Let's click on new project. It's obviously the only CTA, so it's not confusing or anything. It's just it might be helpful to have some guidance. Maybe we'll have it later. Let's see. Okay, confirm project is created. What would you like to build? And there is a bit of a guiding basically, and there is also prompting guide which leads to another page. Let's go with with their example. Proceed. Okay, it didn't select the other ones like database and login. Now it starts to do the work, I guess. And we have develop, we have team, we have assets, domains on the side, community and docs. And they display everything that's happening on the side. It may be interesting to see something here in the meantime, so it's not just the AI prompts showing up or the log showing up on the right side. Now we have something. We have the Twitter clone here. What if we click on theme? Okay, so we can select the themes, I guess, here. Let's go with this blue. Confirm. And they apply the theme selected. Take some time now. Oh, and here you can select specific elements. There is also devices. There is no label for this one. There is one for the new one for info, but it looks like there is nothing for this one. The colors are applied. Nice. And from here you can create a new project. Oh, I can't. I have to upgrade to Pro. So basically there is one project for the free plan and then you have to upload to Pro. You can deploy it. You can message. So basically type, I assume, to make changes. And there is also docs, other documentation. What are the other stuff we can refresh? The chat. That's it, I assume. Cool. Let's try another product. Omakase AI. Create your shopper AI agent with just URL. No hover states here for manifesto and FAQ. There is a hover state for sign in. It's still in beta. Create your personal shopper AI agent with just a URL. So what should I do? Just type in some URL. So they analyze the website and then they create an AI agent on that website. There is nothing on that website. Oh, it redirects actually to our website. Okay. That's nothing related. Oh, no products or FAQ were found. There are some, some UI issues here. As you can see, this is very easy to miss. So it might be more helpful to put it somewhere here or here. Also, the visualization, it's a bit oldish. Let's see what this button does. Oh, we have to create an account. And now everything And they need a phone number, but it's not presented as mandatory field. And we are in the product. We can configure Alex, upload an image, personality. Let's just go with what we have by default for now to walk a bit around. Save changes, but nothing really happens. Or should I go somewhere else? It's a bit confusing. Even here, if you see on the sidebar, we have preview and preview. This is basically just a section title, but It has kind of the same color, slightly dimmed, but not very different. And then we have training materials here, analytics, and account settings. Let's go back to preview. So in our case, the website is not working, but this would be the experience, I assume. Let's go with makeup. So you can select stuff from here and chat with Alex. You can upload the knowledge base here, product catalog here, and personality and so on here. Alex is the only one I assume that you can configure, right? It doesn't see any options to create a new one or something like that. And also there is the widget you can set up. The product needs a bit of a polishing, I would say, on how it looks and works. It's a bit confusing here and there. Somehow the flows are almost like not flows, as weird as it sounds, because they are just like leaving you somewhere or not prompting you towards the next action. Let's try out another one. Scam AI. Spot scams before they spot you. Okay, the website is clean. No hover states here, hover states here. That's a nice touch to just switch between technical and non-technical. Get started and verify the Product Hunt badge. If we click get started, you can sign up with email. Let's sign up. We created the account, we now have to confirm it. Okay, so the email is not coming and I can't Check and confirm. Is there anything else we can do? Like verify now and we can upload an image and kind of that's it, I assume. Oh, and you can switch between light and dark mode. Nice, nice stuff. But unfortunately, because the email doesn't arrive, I can't verify my account. That's it for today. Hopefully you found some interesting stuff around here. There are, as you can see, a lot of AI products in the list. Some of them would need some polishing on the flows, on the UI, on the onboarding and so on. But there are definitely some great ideas that worth checking out and maybe just keep them in mind. Thanks, see you next time.
