Marketing & Sales Strategy for Service Based Business (PROVEN & PROFITABLE)

Daron Pacheco breaks down why product marketing fails for coaches and consultants, then walks through three shifts: selling the transformation instead of the process, connecting every feature to a personal benefit, and using the ACES funnel to move prospects through trust-building without hard selling. A health coach filled her calendar in two weeks after reframing her messaging this way.

Here's something that most people don't talk about. Almost every piece of marketing advice you've ever come across was built with product-based businesses in mind, physical stuff that people can pick up, try on, test out, or return if they don't like it. But when you're running a service-based business, none of that applies to you because what you're selling is invisible. You're asking someone to hand over their hard-earned money for something they can't actually touch, they can't try, they can't return, and that changes everything about how you need to market yourself and your business. So if you've been out here following the standard marketing playbook and it just hasn't been clicking for you, I don't want you to think you've been doing something wrong because you haven't. You've just been playing by rules that were never written for your type of business in the first place. So that's exactly what I wanna fix today. And I'm gonna walk you through the marketing approach that was built specifically for service-based businesses. And there are 3 shifts inside of it that I think you are going to completely change the way you look at your marketing. The first one is something I call destination messaging, which is going to help you position what you do in a way that people actually want to buy into. The second is what I call the so what rule, which helps your audience connect the dots between what you offer and why it matters to them personally. And the third is a funnel framework I put together called the ACES funnel, which is designed to bring people from never having heard of you all the way to becoming a paying client without you having to chase, pressure, or pitch anybody. So let's start with the first one. Shift number 1 is destination messaging. When you sell a service, what you're really selling is a promise, and that's where things get a little bit tricky. Your potential clients can't hold your coaching program in their hands. They can't take your consulting for a test drive or feel the results of your design work before they commit. So what ends up happening is that instead of selling something concrete, You're selling a future outcome that they have to trust and believe in before they've experienced any of it. And when people aren't crystal clear on what that outcome actually looks like for them, they hesitate, they overthink it, and eventually they just don't buy. The reason this happens so often is that most service providers default to describing their process instead of their results. They talk about how many sessions are included, what the deliverables look like, how long the timeline is, and all of that information might be accurate, but it is completely missing the point of what they actually care about. So let me give you a quick example to kind of illustrate this. Imagine you're trying to sell a treadmill. You could spend your whole pitch talking about the incline settings, the weight capacity, the built-in Bluetooth speakers, or you could show someone a picture of what their look— life looks like 6 months after using it consistently. They're healthier, they have more energy, they feel confident in their body again. That's what they're actually buying. And the treadmill is just a vehicle that gets them there. Your service works the exact same way. You're not selling a package or a program, you're selling a transformation, a result. You're selling a better version of your client's life. And when you can paint that picture clearly enough that they can actually see themselves in it, they're gonna wanna get there. So that's what this whole destination messaging is all about. Instead of leading with the process, you lead with the destination, the life your client gets to live on the other side of working with you. So here's what that actually looks like whenever you put something like this into practice. If you're a health coach, you're not selling a 6-week program with weekly calls. You're selling more energy in the morning, better sleep at night, and the feeling of actually being comfortable in your own skin again. If you run a marketing agency, you're not selling content calendars and ad campaigns. You're selling a steady flow of clients coming in, consistent revenue month after month, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing your pipeline is not empty. And if you're a landscaper, you're not selling yard maintenance. You're selling your client Saturday mornings back. You're selling the ability to sit on their porch with a cup of coffee instead of pushing a lawnmower around in the heat. So I had a client a while back and on paper everything looked right for their business. Her website was clean, her services were laid out clearly, she had great testimonials, but her upcoming pipeline and calendar was completely empty. She couldn't figure out why. So when I looked at her messaging, The problem was obvious. Everything she was saying about her, her process, her methodology, her sessions, her meal plans, but her audience wasn't sitting there thinking about macros and mindset frameworks. They were thinking about how tired they were, how uncomfortable they were, that they felt in their clothes, how much they wanted to feel like themselves again. So we shifted everything to speak directly to that destination that we were talking about earlier. And within 2 weeks, her calendar was completely full. Wow. Same service, same coach, same offer, just a completely different story being told when delivering it. That's the power of destination messaging. And it starts with one simple question. How is your client's life genuinely different after working with you? Whatever your answer is to that question, that's what your marketing needs to be built around. So let's go to shift number 2, the so what role. Once you've gotten clear on the destination you're selling, the next thing you have got to do is help people believe that you can actually get them there. And this is honestly where I see most service providers fall apart because they go right back to talking about their offer in terms of what it includes rather than what it does for the person buying it. Think about it this way. If I walked up to you and said, this coffee mug has a ceramic handle, your brain would immediately want to ask, okay, so what? That's the natural human response to any feature or detail that doesn't have an obvious personal benefit attached to it. And yet that's exactly how most service businesses talk about when they go to sell. They list out everything that's included and then just kind of wait for people to get excited about it. So the So What rule is simple. Every single time you mention something about your offer, a feature, a deliverable, a detail, you have to immediately follow it up by answering the question your client is already thinking in their head, which is— Why? So what does that mean for me? Because features on their own, they don't sell anything. What sells is the benefit that lives on the other side of the feature. The ceramic handle on the mug in this case is a feature. Not burning your hand every time you pick it up. Well, that's the benefit. The stitching on a baseball is a feature. Being able to throw a curveball that actually breaks, that's the benefit. The cap on a pen is a feature. Not ruining your shirt with an ink stain right before an important meeting, that's the benefit. Now let's bring this into your world. A lot of service providers market themselves by saying something like, you'll get 3 strategy sessions, a detailed 22-page report, you'll have access to a Slack channel for ongoing support. But again, all of that might be completely true and genuinely valuable in the process, but if that's where the description stops, your client is sitting there thinking, so what does this actually do for me? So here's how you apply the So What rule to the same offer. 3 strategy sessions. So what? It means you're going to know exactly where to focus your energy every single week instead of spinning your wheels trying to figure out what to do next. A 22-page report. So what does that mean for me? It means you walk away with a clear, specific roadmap that takes the guesswork completely out of the equation. Our private Slack channel. I love this one. But what does that mean? And what does that do for the client? It means that when something comes up and you need guidance, you're not waiting 2 weeks for an email response. You get a real response in real time. Do you see how different that alone feels? The offer didn't change at all, but now the client can actually see themselves benefiting from it. And that's the whole game. When someone hears what you offer and their immediate reaction is, "That is exactly what I need," your sales process becomes so much easier because you're not convincing anyone of anything. You're just confirming what they already feel. So the last shift is shift number 3. This is gonna be the ACEs funnel. Now that you know how to craft a message that's clear, compelling, and actually speaks to what your client wants, the last piece is making sure that message is working inside of a system that consistently brings people to you. Because here's the reality, you could have the best destination messaging in the world and apply the, the so what rule to every single thing that you put out. But if there's no structure, you're just throwing good content into a black hole and hoping something sticks and crawls their way out. So what you need is a repeatable system, something that takes a complete stranger and walks them through a logical trust-building journey that ends with them becoming a client. And I want you to think about it like this. Have you ever walked into a store where everything was just everywhere? No organization, no one to help you, no clear sense of where to go or what to look at. And I'm not gonna name any names here. And you just kind of wandered around for a few minutes before walking back out without buying a single thing. That's what most service businesses' marketing looks like from the outside. Mm-hmm. A few social posts here and there, a website that hasn't been touched in maybe 2 years, or a blog that was last updated in 2021, and a social media account that's technically active but not really doing anything or showing that they're a thriving business. Now contrast that with walking into a store where someone greets you, they ask you a couple of questions right away, and then they walk you directly to what you actually came in for. There's no pressure or confusion, just a clear and helpful experience that ends with you leaving with exactly what you needed and feeling good about the decision at the same time. So that's what the ACES funnel creates for your business. ACES stands for Acquire, Convert, Elevate, and Scale, and it's a 6-step framework designed specifically for service-based businesses, coaches, consultants, and experts. So here's— how it works. Step 1 is attention. Before anything else can happen, people have to know you exist. This could be through content like YouTube video, podcast episode, social media posts, paid advertisements. The format doesn't matter as much as the intention behind it. At this stage, you're not trying to sell anybody anything. You're just trying to get the right person interested enough to want to learn more and take one small step. So step 2 is the entry point. Once you have someone's attention, You direct them to a simple opt-in page where they can get something valuable from you for free, a short video, a checklist, a guide, something that helps them solve a specific problem they're already thinking about. When they put in their name and email to get it, they're not just subscribing to a list, they're raising their hand and telling you they're interested in what you do. So let's go to step 3. Step 3 is the trust Builder. This is where things start to get really interesting. And so right after someone opts in, instead of just sending them to a generic thank you page, you have a short video waiting for them. And in that video, your one job is to help them solve one small specific problem, something quick that gives them a real win that they can go and use and shows them that you actually know what you're talking about. At the end of this video, invite them to apply to work with you. No hard sell, no pressure, just the natural next step for the people who are ready to go a little bit deeper. Step 4 is the filter form. The people who are genuinely interested will click through and fill out a short application where they tell you what they're struggling with, what they're trying to achieve, and what they think is getting in the way. This step does two really important things at the same exact time. It gives you all the context you need going into a conversation and it completely shifts the dynamic of the relationship. You are not out here chasing clients. You're reviewing applications from people who want to work with you. Step 5 is the commitment step. If someone's application looks like a good fit, you can send them to your calendar to book a call. No back and forth emails, no trying to pin down a time, no wondering if they're just going to ghost you. Just a clear, simple step. That moves things forward. Step 6 is the conversation. By the time this person shows up on a call with you, they've already watched your content, they've gotten value from you, they've told you exactly what they need help with, and they've taken multiple intentional steps to get to this moment. This is not a cold call where you're trying to convince a stranger to trust you. This is a warm conversation with someone who already believes in what you do. And if it's a genuine fit, that's when you make the offer. So that's the ACES funnel. It's 6 steps, no chasing, no pressure, no weird sales call tactics, just a genuine clear path that takes the right people from never having heard of you to becoming a client. And you can rinse and repeat and do this over and over again. And before I let you go, I want to invite you into something that I think could genuinely be one of the best decisions you make. For your business this year, I built a community called the Brand Builders Community, and it was created specifically for faith-based entrepreneurs, coaches, consultants, and industry experts. These are people who are serious about building something that actually means something, not just a business, but a brand with real purpose behind it. What I've found in this whole time is that one of the biggest things holding people back isn't knowledge or strategy. You can go to ChatGPT or Claude and learn all this stuff, it's isolation, trying to figure out everything on your own without anyone around who actually gets what you're building or why you're building in the first place. And that's exactly what this community solves. It's a space full of like-minded people who are on the same mission, who share the same values, and who genuinely want to see each other win. People you can build with, learn from, and grow alongside. And the best part, it's completely free to join. There's no paid tiers or anything on the other side. There's no catch, just a community of people who think like you, believe like you, and are putting in the work every single day to build something they're proud of. So if that sounds like your type of people, the link to join is going to be right below in the description of this video. Come in and introduce yourself, tell us what you're building, and let's grow together inside the Brand Builders community. I'll see you in there. I hope you guys enjoyed today's video. Make sure to go check out all of the other videos that we have on the channel. I have tons of podcast episodes with the Brand Builders Podcast, so go check those out. There's tons of, of free value there as well. Hope to see you guys in the community, and we'll see you in the next one. Peace.
