This is a YouTube video titled "This is how to manage your direct reports" containing a discussion between two speakers about leadership and management strategies, focusing on encouraging ownership and agency in team members by involving them in setting expectations. The content was created in June 2024 and provides insights on effective management techniques.
I think one of the things that I struggle with is realizing that there are multiple ways to achieve the goal. And too often I'm like, no, this is my way. And so it's got to be done this way. And then you kind of step back a little bit, like, actually, that's not how I would have said it. That's not how I would have done it. But we check achieved the same thing.
Has to be more complicated than a conversation.
Your job as the leader manager is to ask questions.
You can ask questions to understand. You can point them to be like, hey, we've tried this before and it didn't work, so I don't want you to do it or actually go for it. Maybe we just got that tell wrong last time. The thing that's important for me is that they help write it. Because if they're co authors of this expectation, then they will stick to the script that they wrote. If it's you telling them exactly how to do everything. Like we, just as humans, most talented humans, don't want to be told exactly what to do down to the level of detail. You just don't feel ownership over it. You don't feel agency.
