This is a YouTube video titled "Trust is the foundation of great marketing teams. Without it, creativity doesn’t stand a chance." featuring a conversation between Dave Gerhardt and Matt recorded in July 2025. They discuss leadership lessons in marketing, emphasizing the importance of trust within teams to foster creativity and innovation.
What do you think it takes to be the greatest marketing team? How do you push your team to be, to be great? Is it like, go, go find inspiration, go for a walk and be super creative? Like, how do you channel that? What are some leadership lessons to push your team to be better?
Yeah, I mean, two things come to mind. I don't know if this is going to be terribly profound, but this is how I think about it. Number one, which is foundational, is you've got to build trust. Like, trust is the foundation of anything as it relates to a team. Know, maybe this comes back to my firefighting days a little bit. Like, man, in that situation, if you don't trust your team and that everyone's going to be performing, that is literally life or death. So, you know, the stakes are a bit higher there.
I think about, this is a huge thing in the, in the marketing sense of, like, when the team has trust of you, when they know they're going to like, do something and Matt's not going to be pissed about, like, that's where you can really get the creative freedom and the freedom to do, to innovate in marketing. It's. It's the teams that have no trust or the CEO is trying to micromanage every little task in the marketing team. It's the ones that they, the CEO has trust in or marketing leader has trust. And that's where the creativity stuff, that's where the creative comes from, right?
Absolutely. Because then you can take the big swing without fear that you'll, you know, lose your job or your boss is going to get upset or whatever if you make a mistake or there's a failure. So that's number one. I think trust, first and foremost.
