This is a YouTube video titled "Why broad targeting actually KILLS your marketing" featuring a conversation between Dave Gerhardt and Bill Gurley recorded in February 2025. The discussion focuses on marketing strategies, specifically the importance of niche targeting and the challenges of pricing pages and lead qualification in sales and marketing alignment.
If you try and service everybody, you're servicing no one. And I think everybody knows that, but it bears repeating. So if you can here niche down into the best size company that you work with and get one form, don't say, get custom pricing, say book a demo because that's what you want them to do. That's the biggest thing I would take from this page. I do like their differentiation, but their target market's not gonna understand it. I don't.
I think it's interesting. I get two pieces of very conflicting feedback when I like, hey, marketer, you should do this. And it's like, well, to your point, Bill, it's like sales doesn't want us to like rule anyone out with our pricing page. They don't want to scare people away. And then when I tell people to add, like book a meeting. The ability to schedule a meeting right in your demo flow through chili paper revenuehero. Those kinds of tools. They're like, oh, they don't want to get meetings that they shouldn't be getting. They only want to get meetings with the high quality leads. So how do you prevent that? And it's the opposite. It's like, you don't want to scare people away. We do want to scare people away. What is it? And I think ultimately you need to be transparent and clear about what you offer and try to get the right people.
