A speaker uses climbing a hill to explain why strategy matters more than goals alone. Dave discusses growth targets with a CEO, showing how the same goal requires different tools depending on your approach.
It's not just the goal, it's the strategy. And that's where a lot of alignment gets broken inside companies. And so what's the difference? So I just use this metaphor. Your goal is getting to the top of a hill. What's your strategy? Maybe I can climb up the front, the steep part, or maybe I go the long path around the back. Why does it matter what your strategy is? Right. Your strategy is you need different tools. So if I'm climbing up this deep thing, I need ropes and those clippy things. And if I'm going around the back, I need comfy shoes and water. Your strategy is really critical to understand where your goals. And Dave, you just brought up talking to the CEO. CEO that you were talking to probably said, I want you to grow. That was the goal.
