A short role-play demonstrating how to 'clean up' after gossiping: one speaker admits to discussing a colleague with others, explains feelings and circumstances, offers a direct apology and commitment to speak directly in future; the other (Diana) responds appreciatively but nervously. The content models interpersonal repair and transparent communication to reduce gossip-driven drama.

So one of the most challenging things that can happen is when you know that you've been gossiping about somebody and you feel that feeling of, oh, I know I've been saying things about you that I really wish I hadn't said. And I don't know how to handle all that now. What do I do, knowing I've been gossiping? And I really want to clean it up. So we want to show you what that looks like.
So you're going to be the person who's gossiped about me?
Yes.
Okay, great. Super.
Yeah. So, Jim, I want to come forward and let you know that I had a conversation with Matt about you, and I spoke about you in a way that I wouldn't have spoken about you if you were in the room. In fact, what I said was that you're sometimes kind of tight and critical, and I was just. I was upset at the moment, and I feel sad about the fact that I didn't say that directly to you, that I didn't reveal that I had been hurt about a comment that you'd made. And so I want to come and clean that up with, wow.
You know, I think first thing I want to tell you is I really appreciate it. Not very often somebody comes and takes care of that with me, and I feel a little, like, scared. So I appreciate you for coming clean, and I'm a little scared.
Yeah. So I want to get honest with you about exactly what happened. So the other day, when you made that comment about me not sharing my writing with you, I felt hurt, and I didn't tell you that directly. So I went and spoke to Matt as a way to kind of vent off my hurt, and I found something to make wrong about you because I think I was feeling wronged, or I made up a story that I was being wronged and so want to clean all that up. And I recommit to being honest and revealing directly to you rather than to others.
I really appreciate it, Diana. Thank you.
Yeah, you're welcome.
Most great conversations can occur in just a couple of minutes. This one changes a culture so fast when you own that you've gossiped and you clear it up with the person.
