The Four Ways of Leading and When to Use Them

This is a spoken excerpt from a YouTube video (Dave Kashen) explaining four leadership styles promoted by the Conscious Leadership Group: 'To Me' (reactive/victim mindset), 'By Me' (creator/taking responsibility), 'Through Me' (surrendered channel for larger purpose), and 'As Me' (oneness/non-duality). The speaker contrasts unconscious leaders (rigid, single style) with conscious leaders who deliberately shift among these styles depending on the moment, describing psychological and behavioral markers for each box.

One of the things that differentiates conscious leaders from unconscious leaders is that conscious leaders have style flexibility. Unconscious leaders only have one way to show up in the world. To them, they're a hammer and everything looks like a nail. Conscious leaders have the ability to adapt their style depending on what the need of the moment is. Here are four leadership styles that we talk about at the conscious leadership group for you to try on and play with in the world. The first style is what we call to me now. The Tumi leader is a reactive leader. He's at the effect of life is happening to her. When she's in that to me space, she's in what we call a victim mindset. Now, a lot happens in that space. I get energized. I get amped up on adrenaline. I want to prove that I'm right. I come against the world, or I feel like the world is coming against me. Most leaders spend most of their time in the to me box. A lot of things happen in that to me box. When you get interested in another box, you can add to that the buy me box. Now when I step into buy me, all of a sudden I'm saying the world isn't happening to me. I'm creating my experience of the world. So I move from victimhood to being a creator. The key shift move here is I take responsibility. When I'm in by me, new possibilities open up. New ways of being a leader come available to me. A third way to show up in the world as a leader is what we call through me. Now when I'm in through me, all of a sudden I start to get interested in what could actually happen in the world through me by me. Leaders are clear about what they want. They set a purpose, they have goals. They take responsibility through me. Leaders ask the question, what wants to happen through me. I actually start to recede a little bit and something else gets bigger that something else could be. What's the biggest idea of health care that wants to happen through me? What does love want to do through me? So I start to surrender. Moving from the by me to the through me space comes from surrender. I get unattached. I start to be less in control. I start to trust that the universe is friendly and if I surrender to it, powerful things will come through me. The fourth way to lead in the world we call as me as me is this place where all of a sudden I start to realize that there's only one thing going on. This is what most of the great world religions have talked about. It's called oneness or non duality Here as a leader, I start to cooperate with everything around going on in the world. I stop separating me from you, us from them, up from down, and I start seeing that there is a possibility for everybody to win together as me. Leaders get there by experiencing this powerful concept called oneness. As a leader, how about some style flexibility? You could come at it as a Toomey leader victim by me, a creator. You could come as through me, who's simply a surrendered channel for something coming into the world through you. Or you could come as as me, somebody who really does experience that everything is connected in a sublime way. You get to pick take your ch.
