I would define conscious leadership as the practice of being aware.
Really, for me, it invited me to be more introspective and look at the world in a different way and understand that everyone that I interact with, even myself, is a little bit of crazy in them. And it's getting in touch with that and understanding why it exists.
It's a radical framework I like to put radical in there that helps colleagues and leaders collaborate with candor, trust and commitment.
Uptake is a very busy place and it's really important for me to stop and get present. That's an invaluable tool. Just even taking a couple minutes to myself to be in the moment so that I can fully engage and understand in what I'm doing here professionally.
It allows me to open up and be more curious about my co workers instead of really being fixated on what they should be doing or how they should be working or what they should be producing. It lets me, as cheesy as it sounds, get in touch with a more human side of my professional life.
My team uses conscious leadership and has for the last year and a half, and it really helps with addressing issues early, like nothing ever festers, and taking ownership for when things go wrong, which I think is hard to do, but it really helps our group gel a lot better.
The great thing about conscious leadership is that it meets you where you are. You can join it at any, at any level of commitment. If you are uncomfortable with feeling all of your feelings, you don't have to feel all your feelings out on the table at your desk at work. If you just want to commit to not gossiping, that's fantastic. Like, if you want to commit to just having candid conversations, awesome. Knowing where you're at and locating yourself on certain situations is just the beginning of being able to address and work through them.
If nothing else, it's an incredible tool to get to know you. And if you're willing to, it has a lot to offer for introspection and self discovery. I would recommend that to anyone.
So let me be clear. I am the least touchy feely person on the planet. I hate crying, I hate emotions. And so when I came in and we went to the first forum with Jim, I was like, what the hell is going on? Like, what? Wait, we're gonna feel our feelings? People still make fun of me because I, like raised my hand 15 minutes and I'm like, what are we doing? What is the agenda? What does success look like? And Death Row is like, oh, holy shit, do we have some work to do? With this one, and within six months, I was a total convert. Because I've seen the. Just the benefits of it. My recommendation is just try it, because, trust me, I, like, hated every second of it. And I still have a problem with feeling my feelings, but I'm working on it.
