A short instructional video by Dr. Dawn (Delta Janitorial) explaining differences between cleaning, sanitizing (95% kill with dwell time on a pre-cleaned surface), and disinfecting (100% kill with dwell time on a pre-cleaned surface). Emphasizes that visible cleanliness does not assure microbial safety, that sanitizers and disinfectants must be applied to pre-cleaned surfaces and allowed proper dwell time, and that janitorial contracts should include a post-clean disinfecting step; ends with a promotional call-to-action to claim free videos at deltajanitorial.com/freevideos.

Hello, Dr. Dawn here with Delta Janitorial Systems. In this video, I'll be explaining the difference between restroom cleaning, restroom sanitization, and restroom disinfecting. There are important differences that can mean the difference between staying healthy and getting sick. And here's what I mean. When a surface is clean, that means that the visible dirt has been removed and the surface looks clean. Clean. Now that's simple enough. But a clean looking surface can still be covered with billions of germs and microorganisms that can still be transferred to people and cause illness. Sanitation occurs when a sanitizing agent is applied to a clean surface and is allowed sufficient dwell time to achieve a 95% kill of the germs and microorganisms. Some organisms are more difficult to clean than others, so sanitizing agents are aimed at the 95% of microorganisms that are considered easy to kill. But here's the key. The sanitizing agent must be applied to a pre cleaned surface in order to achieve that 95% kill. Most janitorial services use a sanitizing cleaner, but it's applied to a dirty surface and then wiped off. Although the sanitizing cleaner was used, the surface was not sanitized because the sanitizing agent wasn't applied to a clean surface and there wasn't sufficient dwell time for a surface to be disinfected. A disinfecting agent must be applied again to a clean surface and allowed sufficient dwell time to achieve a 100% kill of germs and microorganisms. And once again, the key is the disinfecting agent must be applied to a pre cleaned surface and have a sufficient dwell time to be considered disinfected. If you read the label on a candle of Lysol, the most common disinfecting spray, you'll read that it must be applied to a clean surface and have dwell time to kill all of the germs and viruses. If a disinfecting cleaner is applied to a dirty surface, then the surface hasn't been disinfected. The best practice is to clean with a sanitizing cleaner and then after the surfaces have been cleaned, then apply a disinfectant like Lysol or Lysol wipes to all of your disease transfer points. This is the way that bathrooms are typically cleaned in hospital rooms where it's important to make sure that germs and viruses aren't spread. So ask your janitorial service provider about their restroom cleaning procedures. See if it includes a disinfecting process after the restrooms are cleaned. If it doesn't, then it'd be a good idea to make sure they add that procedure to their process. Just because a surface looks clean doesn't mean it is completely safe, bacteria and virus free.
