The excerpt is an English spoken monologue by Dennis Prager criticizing the idea that economics primarily determines family size. Prager argues that values and cultural beliefs drive fertility decisions, contrasts contemporary claims about affordability with behavior during the Depression, labels the economic-determinism view as a left-wing/Karl Marx–derived idea (referencing "homo economicus"), and asserts wealthy people often have few or no children.

The reason that people have more kids is because their value system tells them to have more children. That's, that's the reason. Not because they'll get more money. The very wealthy don't have many kids. Many very wealthy don't have any kids. And the major reason people don't have kids, they say economics. But it's fascinating. So during the Depression, people would have children, but today they can't afford it. It's so grandiose nonsense, but it is the perfect left-wing belief. Money determines everything. That was originated with Karl Marx, and it has never changed. It is what— when I studied it, it was called homo economicus. Economus, economicus, economicus. Economic man, the economic human being. We are determined primarily by material wants, not even needs, wants.
