Dennis Prager argues that unhappiness comes from comparing your real life to imagined perfect versions of your spouse, family, and success. He says to stop picturing an ideal tree and instead appreciate what you actually have.
Chapters
A lot of the unhappiness that people experience in life is not over the objective facts of their life, which are, objectively speaking, frequently wonderful. They are unhappy, these people, because they compare their objective life to an image of what they thought they were going to have. You must get rid of images. I expected to have a spouse like this. I expected to have a family like this. I expected to have children like this. I expected to have the success of this. I expected to appear this way. Those are the things that make you miserable. People have images about everything. No, enjoy what there is. You don't do it to trees. You don't imagine a perfect tree. Nature is one of the things that we could look at the way it is, but not our, not our most intimate things. That's a big, big obstacle to happiness.
