The excerpt is a single-speaker monologue or short talk on happiness and the logic of pursuing it: the speaker argues that although happiness is a byproduct of other pursuits, that does not prevent one from pursuing it — you should pursue the things that produce happiness. The speaker references their own "happiness" book and the U.S. founders' phrase "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." No multi-speaker dialogue is present.

There are so-called experts on happiness who will say you can't pursue happiness. That's a big mistake. In fact, it is one of the most common statements. In fact, I make it in my happiness book. I don't say you can't pursue happiness, but I do say that happiness is a byproduct of other things. So the fact that happiness is a byproduct doesn't mean you can't pursue it. This is an issue of logic here, and it's a very important point. There are those who say, look, you can't pursue happiness because happiness is always a byproduct of something else in life. To which I say, that is a non sequitur. Happiness is always a byproduct of something else, agreed. The fact that happiness is a byproduct of other things doesn't mean you can't pursue it. What you do is you pursue the things that happiness is a byproduct of. That's it. They're not mutually contradictory at all. Often people don't think clearly, and this would be one of those examples. Oh, you can't pursue happiness. Happiness is a byproduct of other things. All right, so pursue the things that produce it. Of course you can pursue happiness. The founders of the United States of America had it right when they spoke of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. So you indeed can pursue happiness, and that it is a good thing to do.
