The Role of Sexual Desire in a Healthy Marriage

In this episode of the Dennis Prager "Male‑Female Hour" (part of Timeless Wisdom), host Dennis Prager tackles a recurring complaint from married women that their husbands view them primarily as "sex objects" or "pieces of meat." Prager argues that, contrary to many modern feminist critiques, a husband’s sexual attraction to his wife is a natural, God‑given aspect of male biology and should be celebrated rather than feared. He frames male sexual drive as a powerful, almost "dynamite" force that, when properly channeled, can strengthen marriage. Throughout the show Prager references his own four‑CD series on male sexuality, distinguishes the "mind" (source of happiness) from the "brain" (source of unhappiness), and urges women to re‑interpret their husbands’ pursuit as a blessing. Callers from various U.S. cities share personal stories—some affirming Prager’s view, others expressing distress when their husbands lack sexual interest. A Catholic therapist/counselor offers a theological counter‑argument that sex should be a self‑gift rather than objectification. Prager repeatedly emphasizes monogamy as the way men “fight” their nature, and he invites further calls on the topic. The episode is interspersed with sponsor advertisements for weight‑loss programs and Prager’s own products.

On today's episode of Timeless Wisdom.
I've been married for 11 years. We're expecting our third child. And a few years ago, I was more of the mindset where I was resentful of the way my husband was kind of in constant pursuit. And it seems like that was all he wanted. And it wasn't really all he wanted, but where it seemed like he— that was frequently on his mind. And it took a change of heart and change of mind for me to look at much of that was to my advantage in our marriage. I know that he only has eyes for me.
That's coming up on Timeless Wisdom with Dennis Prager.

I am conservative. I believe there are only two sexes. Now on some college admissions forms you have check, and it's not even called sex, called gender, and then they have a box M, a box F, and a box other. I am of the old-time belief that there are males and females, men and women. Hi everybody, welcome to the show. Now I have to to announce that this, the topic today, as it is sometimes on the Male-Female Hour, really is not for kids, not for little kids. Certainly a teenager should hear this, but under that— and you, you make the call on the teenager, you, you the parent, if, if you, you homeschool your kids. I know a lot of homeschool parents listen to the show with their homeschoolers, and I'm delighted, and I, and I think it's a great decision. But, uh, the following subject is not for little kids. All right. All right. Here it is. And it's a lament that many women have about their husbands. And I want to address, like any of these subjects, I want to address them in the hope that I can help your marriage and help male-female relations in general. I am I have an immense number of emails, not to mention just comments made to me when I go around lecturing, about the number of marriages my insights into, into men and women, especially into men, have, have helped marriages. And it make— it's just terrific. Uh, it makes my day. All right, here it is. Here is element that a number of women, maybe a lot of women. I just, I don't know the number, I don't know the percentage, but it's enough for me to know that it is worthy of a topic. And that is where a woman will complain that her man, her husband, sees her as— and I use the word in its vernacular— a piece of meat. Or the more, the more, uh, I guess sophisticated ways, just as just a sex object, or he objectivizes me, or sees me as a piece of meat, as I said earlier. Let me, let me address that subject. And again, of course, I, I address male sexuality in my 4 CDs on male sexual nature. That's what's helped so many couples I, I urge you to get them, to listen to them. Uh, you can call 800-225-8584, 800-225-8584, or go to DennisPrager.com. There's Prager Radio and there's DennisPrager.com. They're affiliated, obviously, but DennisPrager.com is where all the CDs and lectures and so on are available. And let me address this and help those of you who worry about this. First of all, my first response to any married couple is, may you be so blessed that for many, many, many years he sees you as a sex object. It is not only not a curse, it is a blessing. So, uh, I, I I don't— I not only don't want you to lament it, I want you to celebrate it. Now, when is it not a blessing? When you add one word: he sees me only as a sex object. Now, frankly, it's hard to imagine that there are any marriages— maybe it's true for the, the beginning of some in a hot and heavy relationship, but in, in the course of a marriage, it is hard to imagine a man who only sees his wife as that. It's hard to imagine. I mean, it may exist, but it's hard to imagine. But if that is the case, that is a problem. I fully acknowledge it. Or if that's the only time he relates to you, that is a problem. Of course these are problems. But, but I want to— I want you to understand that that is a blessing. If he sees you that way. It is— it's not to be feared, because male sexuality can be frightening. That's the reason I do this program, it's the reason I did those CDs, the reason I'm writing my book on male sexuality. It is, in its initial stages, frightening to most women. I totally understand that. By golly, it's even frightening to us men who have a conscience. Male sexual drive is very powerful, can be very objectifying, can be very difficult, very difficult to control. It is dynamite. It is the dynamite of the human species. So I understand why a woman could find it fearsome. Absolutely. But what I'm trying to do is defang that monster. Of male sexuality and explain it so that you understand that that's okay if that's how he sees you, his wife. It's not only okay, it's actually a good thing. It's a blessing. Would you— why would you rather it be that he sees you as a sex object sometimes, only when you want him to? That's not the way males are made. It's not the way we are made. It's not a— it's not something where it takes a long time to— till we figure it out how to see you sexually. That's a female response. She does not walk around seeing her husband in 99% of cases as a sex object. Of course not. That's not the way it works. That's why the argument, well, how would a man react if a wife saw him? Well, first of all, most men would think, oh my God, am I lucky. So anyway, but it's not a point. Secondly, you have to understand, we men are not as dumb as you think. We can in fact concentrate on two things at one time on occasion. We can walk and chew gum. We can see you as a sex object and as brilliant and talented and good and kind and sweet and a great mother and a great wife and a great thinker and a great talker and a great homemaker and a great lawyer and a great— whatever it is. It doesn't exclude seeing you in totality. But, but I, I need to, I need to reaffirm the, the fact that it would be a curse, it would be a real curse in your marriage if he didn't see you that way. Now, you know, I don't, I don't know when, as people get, get much older, I don't know. All I could say is that the elderly, you know, I don't think that they stop having these feelings. At least the men don't. So I want him to see you this way when you're 90. 1-800-PRAGER-776. 1-800-PRAGER-776. This is the time to open up. I don't care if you even want to just say you're anonymous. It doesn't matter to me. All I want you to be is open and to react to this Does this offend you? Does this frighten you? Do you disagree with me? Do you agree? Are you thrilled to hear this? Is it a relief? How do you react to this? I am addressing the issue of women who object to their husband seeing her as a quote-unquote piece of meat, or as a sex object, or whatever it is. Now, as I said, if that's all he sees you at, it's a problem, but it's so rare in a marriage. It may be in the beginning of a relationship that that's the primary way you are seen, but it is— it's almost inconceivable to me that that would be the case in the course of a marriage. Let's go to Devin in Irvine, California. Devin, Dennis Prager, hi.
Yeah, hi Dennis, and maybe you could help me articulate my own thoughts. Um, women have perceived bearing children as kind of a burden or a curse in some ways, and although it's a blessing too, and I think that maybe women could understand that in the same terms as we've got a sex drive that in a sense is a great responsibility and a burden on us as men.
And it's a big burden. Stay on with me. That is exactly right, and I want women to understand that it is a huge burden. Back in a moment. This episode of Timeless Wisdom will continue right after this.

Now back to more of Dennis Prager's Timeless Wisdom. Hi everybody, this is the Male-Female Hour on the Dennis Prager Show. Every week at this time, about men and women. I call it the Male-Female Hour though because it's, it's beyond just men and women. It's to the It's to the deep natures of us. That's why I call them male, female. It was a debate that I had. Anyway, you can call it what you want. I have asked, by the way, and I repeat that if you have little kids listening, that is preteen, uh, uh, this is for older folks. This is for teenage and, and older. And I'm talking about the very sensitive subject and, and I do it because it's got to be addressed because I want to help marriages here. I lament that women have, that some women have, oh, he only sees me as, and they will use the term piece of meat or sex object. And my reaction to that is, well, may you be blessed that your husband always see you as that. And the notion that he only sees me as that is so rare as to be something that you'd almost have to study in a, uh, uh, you know, be worthy of studying by some psychologists, because it's so rare that you'll be only seen as that. I mean, he may only see as that, you know, a billboard, a woman in a billboard, or maybe a movie star in a movie, or someone, you know, in a catalog that comes to the home, but not you. That should be your worst worry. Oh, he only sees me as a sex object. He doesn't only see you as that. But he, he will frequently see you as that. Yeah, that's good. 1-800-PRAGER-776. And you know, it's so interesting because a woman just called and, and then hung up. Maybe she just had cold feet about saying it. I don't know. She just got married and she said her problem is that her husband doesn't see her as that. I wish women could have heard that call. If you could call back, I'm going to try to take all your calls. 1-800-PRAGER-776. 1-800- Dennis Prager, 776. Is this a problem in your marriage? Do you agree with what I'm saying? Some of you may in fact disagree. Now back to Devin, this gentleman in Irvine, California. You were saying that men have— that men's sexual nature is a burden.
Yeah, absolutely it is.
It is. And I want women to sympathize with it and not fear it. Or both, if they will. But all right, go on.
I think also that as far as some women that may perceive men as only looking at them in that way, kind of goes to what Allison Armstrong talks about, a wonderful guest you've had a few times, and that men are very single-focused. So at that time when we're thinking— that's right, yeah, absolutely. I mean, we've got, you know, we're on top of the food chain and nothing's going to stop that from, from continuing.
Very good. That is exactly right. And Allison is the best, and you're absolutely right about that.
Thank you.
Yes, thank you for calling. I appreciate it. It's very important. This is one hour of the week that I really rely on calls because I want people to hear other people, not just me here. And it may involve your opening up. These, these are often difficult subjects, but it's— it can only help you and help others. But that's exactly right. When a man concentrates on whatever it is, if he's concentrating on building a rocket, if he's concentrating on a video game, if he's concentrating on sex, that's it. We, we are una-focused by and large, although as I said earlier, he could still chew and walk, uh, chew gum and walk at the same time, in that he can see you as a sex object and is brilliant and is wonderful and has all these other things. Alrighty, let— this is an— I think we have an important one here. St. Paul, Minnesota, and Kirsten. Kirsten, Dennis Prager, thank you for calling.
Hi Dennis, it's a thrill to speak to you. I love your show.
Thank you.
I'm just— I wanted to call and say I've been married for 11 years. We're expecting our third child, and a few years ago I was more of the mindset where I was resentful of the way my husband was kind of in constant pursuit, and it seemed like that was all he wanted. And it wasn't really all he wanted, but where it seemed like it— he— that was frequently on his mind. And it took a change of heart and change of mind for me to look at much that was to my advantage in our marriage. Um, I know that he only has eyes for me. I feel totally secure. In our relationship. I don't worry about him straying because I know how much he appreciates and enjoys me. And in changing my mind about the way I looked at it, um, has really, really, um, what prompted you to go relationship?
Um, well, not just improved your physical relation, improved your relationship, period.
Yeah, emotionally our connection is very strong.
And anyway, yes, exactly.
How many times we have that connection, uh, that's right, that's right, foundation.
That's right. Now, what prompted you to change your mind?
Well, you know, I think I had to decide if I wanted to be always fighting him off, um, being annoyed. If I had to choose if I wanted to be annoyed by, by this, or if I wanted to accept it. And really, I just stopped to think about how it benefited me Was it really something that was to my disadvantage or was it to my advantage? And it was just changing my perspective on it. And it helped.
You are amazing. You are amazing to have done that on your own. It's so remarkable and so impressive.
Thank you.
It really is. Thank you and God bless the two of you. That's really not common because what she did was she used her mind rather than her instinct. Because for all of us, that's a theme of my Happiness Hour, the mind versus the brain. The mind is the source of happiness, the brain is the source of unhappiness. And the example, you know, I always give the example: brain wants cheesecake, mind wants to lose weight. Which is going to make you happier? So this is very simple. What— so her instinct as a female was, oh my God, this guy, I mean, I can't walk two steps without his hounding me. And then her mind said, hey, wait a minute. I'm his one woman. He loves me. I love him. So that's fine. So what? And that's exactly right, isn't it? Once I say it, isn't it simple? But it takes a big deal. It takes a big woman. We have the term big man. It takes a big woman. It takes a big man to fight his instincts. It takes a big woman to fight hers. Now you'll say, well, what about a man then controlling his instincts? Okay, folks, and Alan, please write this down as another subject. Yes. Here's the— you know how men fight their natures? By being monogamous. You fight your nature by giving in to him. Even when you're not in the mood, and he fights his nature by only being with you. And that is so anti what was taught, all men and women are basically the same, the most disastrous recipe for marriage ever offered, because we are all living in the age of stupidity, and that's very sad, it has terribly destroyed destructive effects. I will take more of your calls on the "He sees me as only," or not only, "just sees me as a piece of meat." Subject on the male-female hour, 1-8-PRAGER-776, The Dennis Prager Show. This episode of Timeless Wisdom will continue right after this.

Now back to more of Dennis Prager's Timeless Wisdom. Hi everybody, the male-female hour. What I said at the end of the last segment, and again I repeat, if you're just tuning in, this is for those teenage and older. Little kids, probably not the, uh, not the hour they should be hearing. I don't think it's disastrous, but it's, uh, I don't, I don't think it's for little kids. And so I'm telling you that now, uh, it is about the lament that some wives have. He, he sees me as a piece of meat, a sex object. To which I have responded, uh, may he do so, uh, forever, for many, many years. Uh, there's no husband who only sees his wife as that. That, that is the way he may see a picture of a woman or a woman walking down the street, but not, but not a woman he lives with. Uh, it's, it's— so don't worry about that. It's a blessing if he sees you that way. That is, that is male sexuality. That is part of male sexuality. What I ended though, and I'm gonna devote an hour to another time, is the notion a lot of women feel that if they give in to the man's sexual desires on a regular basis, they're making a concession, which they may well be because they are not in the mood as much as he is. That's just the way most of the time it is. Not in every marriage, but most of the time. But he makes his own concession and fights his nature, and that is he's monogamous. But nobody talks about that because men— the whole issue of male sexuality is he's afraid to talk about it and she's afraid to hear about it. That's why it's so important to have an hour a week on national radio about it. Alrighty, what happened to our, uh, now here— all right, I'll just take it for— there was a, a young man A 29-year-old man who claimed to have been a, uh, a marriage counselor who said it's not a good thing to ever objectify anybody because then, then they're a means to an end and not an end in themselves. Um, it's— on paper that sounds good. In reality, since that is what male sexual nature does, and since, uh, uh, if if there is a good marriage, the bedroom is a place for him to allow himself to be free. I don't see what's wrong with that. That's part of the way God made our sexual natures. All right, let's— but anyway, he's not on, so I can't fully relate what he was going to say. All right, here is the woman I mentioned earlier who— good, I'm glad you did get back— in Minneapolis, it's Celia. Hi, Celia, Dennis Prager.
Hi.
Hi.
I'm married to a wonderful man. We've been married nearly a year, and when I was dating, I dated a lot of guys that were more into me because of— they saw me that way. But I— it frightened me. So I married, um, this amazing man that we have so much in common, and we just enjoy each other so much. But he doesn't objectify me that way. He doesn't see me sexually that way. And I— because, you know, contrasting the earlier caller with all the things that she enjoys about security and all of that, we have a wonderful relationship and I know he's absolutely monogamous and I totally trust and respect him and I know he feels that way about me, but there's something that's missing. And so I just think women need to really feel so lucky when their husbands cherish them and value them. That way it is a blessing. So, wow.
Well, I, I cannot thank you enough because coming from a woman, especially a married woman, it's, it's, it's, I think, more powerful than coming from me. So I'm, I'm, I'm on the behalf of so many women listening and so many men who want their women to hear this. I thank you. You know what it sounds like, and this is something you really need to I think you need to address because it's— I, I, you know, it doesn't take a, a perceptive person to know that you, you, you have some pain in your voice. What, what, what you did, it seems, and, and this is a fascinating and common problem, is you did the opposite of what you— you went to the other end from what you had experienced with other men earlier.
Right.
Yep. And you married with your mind only almost.
And so for a woman being emotionally based, it's kind of a struggle how to be happy with that.
Yes, yes, I know that, I know that. I want every everybody to hear you, and I wish I could talk to you and him longer. We return in a moment. Dennis Prager here, the male-female hour. For those just tuning in, this is— this hour, this particular one, some are, some are not, but this particular one is not for little kids. And I welcome you back, 1-800-PRAGER-776. That's so sensitive, the topic, that I'm watching the board. It's like a— it's like a I don't know what the analogy would be, but in one of these on and off signs, people call in and then they get, they stay on, then they get cold feet and then they leave. Then some come back even. The subject is the lament that some, I don't know how many, some wives have. He sees me as a sex object or a piece of meat. And my argument that there's no man that sees his wife only as that. It's not possible. You can't live with somebody and only see the person as that. Maybe that's the way— not maybe, that's the way a man can see a woman in a billboard or a woman on a TV commercial, uh, or a woman in a, in a catalog that shows up in the house. What is that, Victoria's Secret? That— but, uh, but not someone you live with. So it is, it is a blessing. And you just heard from a woman who's married a year, who purposely married a man because she didn't want to be seen as that way, and now she laments it, as she should. I wish though I could talk to them. I do. I so wish that. All right, let's go. We do have the, uh, the counselor who I mentioned earlier, and I'm glad he could get back in. Dallas, Texas. Josh. Josh, thank you for calling. This is Dennis Prager.
Thank you, Dennis Prager. Hey, I think you are great and brilliant, but on this one topic, I just think that this is absolutely the opposite message from what couples actually need to be hearing. You brought up about the person— the human person is not a means to an end, but an end in themselves. And then you stated that—
No, I was paraphrasing what I thought you had said to Eva.
And that's correct. You paraphrased correctly. I'm recapping, but then you said that that's good on paper, but you just didn't think that that actually played out in reality.
Well, only, only in this particular realm, in the bedroom.
Mm-hmm.
Well, I guess my concern is this: God has called us to be holy as he is holy. I'm actually a Catholic therapist, so I'll put that in there too. So I do use theology in my counseling practice as well. And because God has called us to be holy as he is holy, we are called to go beyond what we deem to be our nature. We are called to be perfect in his image. And so sex is where we communicate with our bodies love, and love is never selfish. Love is never about receiving, it's about giving. And so when sex becomes about a gift of self to other, and that person returning that gift usually the woman returning her gift, literally, in her body, to us, then that is when sex is properly ordered. And of course we're always going to fall short of the mark, but I think the point is we have—
But why is— all right, I agree with everything you said, but I don't know why it contradicts what I said. The woman— let us say the woman says, "Honey, I love you, and I want you to take me—" I mean, obviously within bounds, but within— even the loosest word of understanding of normal, but honey, I want you to have me the way you would like. I want to be your fantasy woman, not just your wife and the mother of your children. And that's wonderful.
And you know, perhaps it's just a clarification of terms that needs to be had. And, and that is, I would not ever use the term object. I think that the man always needs to be in pursuit of his wife. I don't think that that ends when I say I do. I think that that's part of the I do every day. And I think that it's great for a man to continue to have a sexual attraction to his wife. I think where we get into problems is when we allow our, our passions, our emotions, or even our body to dictate what we know to be right, um, so that, you know, I have absolutely no control over my body anymore. I, I'm, I'm— well, no, I wasn't advocating—
no, no, Oh, well, I wasn't advocating that. I happen to think that if we sat down for a half hour, we would end up 98% in agreement. Perhaps you're right.
I would not doubt that because you are pretty much— I'm on board with everything you say. Alright, alright.
Well, God bless you. And I really mean that, folks, because you know I have no problem in clarifying differences, but I do think we would. I think what he is worried— not think, he is worried by the term "object." But I'm using it because that's the term that a woman will say. And I'm saying it's okay, it's okay, it's the bedroom, it's the bedroom. And of course, and I've said it every break, after every break, that that's— it's inconceivable. That's the only way your husband will see you. In fact, you want it a little. And this is where the 2% where we may differ. I think you do want it a little because He doesn't want to be in bed with the mother of his children. That role, of course you're the mother of his children, but that's not a turn-on. I mean, that, that, that we have to talk real. We have to talk real. Marriages are at stake here. We can't talk romanticized wishes. Oh, I love you. I love the mother of my children. And he does. He does the rest of the time. In bed. That's— the children shouldn't be in bed. The mom isn't in bed. It's the woman that I so ached for physically when we married. That's the ideal, to be in the bed with you at that moment. All right, let's see here. Let's go to, uh, Woodland Hills, California. Liz. Hello, Liz. Dennis Prager, thank you for calling. Oh, Liz, hi.
Yes, go ahead. Um, no, I— first of all, I love your show, um, and you really shaped a lot of my thinking. Um, I was in a marriage for 12 years with a man who absolutely did not want me in that way, and it did a number on my psyche as, as a woman. And now at 49, I'm in a committed relationship with a guy that absolutely adores me and can't get enough of me sexually. I mean, I feel like a kid in a candy store now.
Oh, God bless you. I see there's another woman. I hope every woman hears this. That's why I said you should only be blessed by a guy who sees you that forever. We'll be back in a moment. This episode of Timeless Wisdom will continue right after this.

Now back to more of Dennis Prager's Timeless Wisdom. Oh boy, I, I wanna— don't hang up, folks. If you got on, do not hang up. It so pains me that that this is just an hour. The broadcasts and everything related and the columns on Prager Radio and the tapes The CDs at DennisPrager.com. I want to summarize some of your calls here. This is a great one. Joanne, she and her husband reached a compromise. If he showed me affection, then she could live with being his, quote, piece of meat, because affection affirms that that's not all she is. Exactly. That's terrific. That's exactly right. That's exactly right. Phil in Dallas, when a man hears no all the time from his wife, it makes it difficult to pursue and feel sexual toward a spouse. That's exactly right too. This thing about the, the hearing no from, from the wife, the notion, well, she's not in the mood. Of course she's not in the mood nearly as much as he is, 90% of marriages. Uh, but I can only say what I say on the Happiness Hour. If you let your moods control you, you will have a very unhappy life. James in California, wife and he have arguments because he no longer sees her as an object. How can he? He's had sex with her so many times already. That is where you have to be honest and open about how she can— and this is where I don't know if we would differ or not, the counselor and myself— where can she make herself just a sex object in the bedroom? What could she do? That's what— that's the reason that there is a billion trillion dollar industry in lingerie and, and, and the like. It's exactly for that reason, and it's got its place. It's okay, it's a blessing. Uh, okay. Oh, Doug, I wish I could take God and Doug and Cleveland. I can't even summarize it. It's so fascinating though. You folks should call in another week. We'll have open lines too for a male-female show. And Donna in LA, she loves it when her husband lusts after her. You should, Donna. You're a healthy woman. May he lust after to you for many more decades to come. That is my wish to all of you in your marriages. This was the Male-Female Hour on the Dennis Prager Show. Thanks for listening.
