How To Overcome Stress Eating

De Deenaz explains why stress triggers cravings for sugar and carbs: conflict or work frustration releases cortisol, a hormone that drives you to eat for relief. The cycle reinforces itself until you process the emotion. Journaling can interrupt it by calming your nervous system and lowering cortisol.

Have you been stress eating of late? Do you feel that you go through a lot during the day and then you don't know how to control your emotions and you just go out there and you eat something and then you regret? Hi, my name is Deenaz and in this video I will be talking to you about stress eating. I will be telling you that how to deal with stress and how to overcome stress eating. A lot of people do not know how to, how to handle a situation. Let's take the example, if you are married and your husband told you something and you get upset about it. You have You have something you don't want to tell, and you're holding on, and you're harboring some emotions there. And then your husband just takes off to work, and he's gone. And here you are left alone all day at home, and you keep brooding about the same situation again and again. Now, instead of dealing with the situation, you start dealing with it, and your emotions are building up throughout the day. When your emotions are building up throughout the day, what do you do? You quickly go and maybe want to have a hot cup of coffee with sugar and milk. Or if you are a chudva person, you want to quickly go to the cupboard and eat a bowl of chudva. Or if there is, or if there are any sweets or tea cake at home, you want to quickly go and eat that because you have these cravings. Now if you don't deal with this on a day-to-day basis. You know, the next day something else will happen, and maybe you had a situation with someone at your place of work, and you went through the same thing again. You are upset, you want to cry, maybe you also cry, and then you go drink a lot of coffee, eat churwa, eat sweets, eat biscuits, eat cookies. And then the next day again the same thing happens, and maybe it is someone at your place of work, or someone, maybe your mother-in-law, or you are upset with your children. And this is a vicious circle. Do you feel that you go through this on a regular basis? This is what I call stress eating. Now, stress eating is when you're emotionally upset about an incident that has happened, your body goes into stress mode. Now, if you don't deal with this on a regular basis, then the incident— another incident happens and another one happens and another one happens, and the stress levels in your body go up. So I want you to know that you are not— you're not overweight or you're not unhealthy because you don't know what to do. Most of you are overweight and unhealthy because you don't know how to deal with stress. So what really happens when you're stressed? When you are very stressed, your body releases a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone which makes you want to eat more sugary foods and more carbohydrate foods. So when your body goes into stress mode— frustration, anger, fear, irritability, sad, not feeling loved, rona dhona all the time— at that time your body releases a lot of cortisol, and that's when we want to eat a lot. Now this happens not only for sad or irritating things. This also happens if you are very happy. When you are very happy also, you want to start eating a lot of your comfort foods. So the most important thing is to control your emotions so that you are not stress eating. In order to control your emotions, you have to learn to let go of all that you are holding on to immediately. So supposing there was an incident that happened today at your place of work and you really wanted to achieve something and you did not, or your— it was time for your raise and you did not get the raise and you came home feeling sad and dejected. You come home and you just hit your cupboards and you just eat whatever comes your way. Instead of doing that, you need to come And what you can really do, a beautiful hack for you, is you can write your emotions out. You can journal it out and just say, I just let go of everything. And the more you write, the more you journal, you're going to let go of your negative emotions, and your cravings for sugary foods, for khara foods, will start coming out. So the way to deal with stress eating is to write out your emotions and let go of your emotions and keep this mind absolutely calm and absolutely relaxed. And I want you to try this out on a regular basis and you will start realizing that you are not stress eating anymore.
