Pre And Post Workout Meal Options

Deenaz explains how to time meals around workouts for energy and comfort. Before exercise, wait 2 hours after a full meal or 1 hour after a snack; she prefers 3-4 hours. Try dry fruits, a banana, or biscuits with tea. After working out, eat fruit, a smoothie, or a full meal right away, then wait 2-3 hours before your next session.

Are you unsure of what you have to eat before your workout and after your workout? I know that you know what to eat throughout the day and you've planned your own meals and know exactly what to eat, but you're always unclear of just before starting whether to eat or not a workout. And post the workout can you eat immediately. Hi, my name is Deenaz, your health and fitness coach since 1993, and in this video I will be giving you some cool tips on what exactly you can eat before your workout and what exactly you can eat after your workout. So let's start with before your workout. Now, irrespective of whatever time your workout is one of the first things that you need to understand is when you're working out, and if your goal is fat burn, if your goal is to lose weight, the energies that the workout— your body uses is not only the stored body fat but also the food that you eat. So it uses two pathways and it uses two types of energies: your stored body fat and the foods that you eat. So lot of people are under this impression that, "Oh, I have a lot of fat and I don't need to eat anything and let me just burn it all off." It doesn't work that way. So especially if you are doing a cardio activity which is required for you to burn fat, you need to have a pre-workout meal. So a pre-workout meal can be anything between 15 minutes before the workout or even 5 minutes before the workout depending on what you are going to eat. So before I get into the pre-workout meal, let me tell you that if you have eaten a small snack like a small sandwich or a small wrap, then you can do your workout within 1 hour of you doing the workout— eating that meal. But if you have eaten a full meal, let's take for example a lunch, a full meal that requires a lot of digestion, then you need to keep a 2-hour gap. Why keep a 2-hour gap? Because when you eat a full meal, your body— your body requires time to digest all that food. So now the blood is required by your digestive system, and when you do a workout, blood is required by your muscles as well. So if you try to work out immediately after your food, then you are confusing the body and the blood is being diverted to two different areas, and you start feeling nauseous and you start feeling sick. So remember to have a 2-hour gap after a full meal. And generally, let me tell you what my experience has been over the last 33 years of exercising, is I always prefer to have at least a 3 to 4 hour gap so that I don't feel full and don't feel sloshy. After my meal, and I feel light when I am doing my workout. So let's get straight into what are the kinds of foods that you can eat before a workout. So I will tell you what are the kinds of foods that I eat before a workout, which gives me just enough energy to— just gives me enough energy to do the workout, and then it also makes me feel really light. So generally things like a handful of dry fruits. So you really don't need to obsess about let me count 5 almonds and 3 walnuts and 2 pistachios. You don't need to count that. Just take a small katori, dump in a few dry fruits and just eat that. It gives you enough energy. For me personally, having 2 figs, 2 dried figs gives me a lot of energy and It's enough for me to do even a 5 km run or a full 1 hour of aerobic workout. You can also have 2 light Marie biscuits with a cup of tea. So even a cup of coffee or a cup of tea with a drusk will give you enough energy. Now if you are not a tea person or a coffee person or a biscuit person, you can also have a small elaichi banana or you can have couple of slices of apple. Now apple is a high fibrous food, so it takes time for it to digest and go into the bloodstream. So you want to have something that is going to be quick to digest and goes into your bloodstream and gives you that energy instantly. So these are some of the things that will give you energy instantly. Or you can have a small bowl of papaya or a small bowl of melon or a small bowl of watermelon. These things give me enough energy. Now, if you are somebody who drinks milk, you can about half an hour to 1 hour before, you can have a small cup of milk as well. But my experience has been that milk makes a lot of people nauseous during the workout. So if you feel that you have consumed some food and you are feeling nauseous during the workout, you need to change it. So here I am trying to tell you that these things that you that I talk about are not set in stone. These are only suggested ideas. Now you need to work with what works for you. You need to understand and do what makes you feel comfortable and makes you feel happy. And most important is what you are able to digest. So work around your digestive plan. Now this is about pre-workout meal. Now a lot of people have concerns about post-workout meal. If you are training heavily and you are exhausted by the end of that 1-hour workout, one of the best things that works is like a apple smoothie— a banana smoothie. Banana and coconut milk, just blend it together with a little bit of coconut milk, blend it together, and that gives you like a lot of energy. What you can also have post your workout is Sometimes I do that. I just finish my workout and go have a glass of coconut water. That fills me up and gives me a lot of energy. Or I again have a lot of dry fruits, have some dry fruits, or I go and have prunes or figs or dates with a bowl of dry fruits. If you don't want to eat that much of dry fruits, then you can go and have a bowl of fruits. It's just that sugar from the fruit will give you enough energy to get started. Now if you did not eat after overtraining, after training for an hour or hour and a half, then you will start feeling exhausted. And the idea of training is not just to get results. The idea of training is to get enough energy throughout the day. So that is why the pre-workout meal is important, and that's why the post-workout meal is important. Now for all those of you who are working And are wondering whether you can eat your breakfast straight away after training? Oh yeah, you can. After training, you can immediately eat your breakfast, your lunch, or your dinner, and it really doesn't matter at all. Doesn't matter. But it's only after eating food you need to give a 2-3 hour gap so that your body is light and you feel that energy. So I hope that this has given you a lot of insights about pre-workout meals and post-workout meals. Just go out there, try it out, because the idea of training is to get a lot of energy.
