A YouTube video by Dr. Don Wood recounts a clinical vignette about a 15-year-old girl adopted from Russia who had been talking about suicide and had not disclosed her sexual orientation to her parents. She described a traumatic memory of being driven away from her birth mother. After therapeutic intervention she reported feeling "like you just lifted the weight of the world off my shoulders," and subsequently engaged in future planning, indicating a marked emotional recovery for her and relief for the family.

Young girl, she was 15 years of age. Her parents called me and said she's been talking about suicide to her friends and what her parents sort of knew, but she had never told them that she was gay. Her parents said, we don't care if she is, but she's never talked to us about it. That may have been part of where she was talking about suicide, not knowing how to handle it. But the other issue that she had is she was adopted. She was adopted from Russia when she was very young. And I took her through the process. Now she was very, very quiet. Didn't really say an awful lot as was taking her through it. The thing that she told me, one of her big traumas was I remember being taken from my mother. I was in the car and I was looking out the back and I was watching as they were driving away, watching as far as I could see, until my mother just disappeared. That was one of her big traumas. We worked on a number of different things. And then I asked her, can you tell me what you're feeling and what you're experiencing right now? And she said it so calmly, I feel like you just lifted the weight of the world off my shoulders. And I was like, oh, good tell. I could not pick up on her what she was feeling, what she was experiencing. The next day I get a call from her mother and said she sat up with us till 4 o' clock in the morning, planning her future. She wanted to go to college. So it was a huge healing process for the whole family, especially for this girl. Everybody has the ability just to get that unresolved trauma out of the way so you can live your best life.
