Beyond Connection: Unlocking the Secrets to Lasting Relationships

Dr. Don Wood, Helen, and John discuss vitamin C dosing for immune health (4,000-5,000 mg daily, or 2,000 mg every two hours when sick) and how lasting relationships depend on handling conflict well. They recommend pausing arguments overnight and returning to them with love.

Serious for a minute. You know, I had a bunch of tests, and I needed to go in. And it was better to hear, we have a plan for this. There's something we can do. This is survivable. And here are your results.
Right. Caitlin just put in. She's gonna change her mind now. Because of John's answer, we went on.
A cruise for a week. We were called the whole cruise. Despite being in the Caribbean. I went scuba diving four times, plus snorkel. Got shivered out of water, came home, got sick, was sick for a week. Now my wife has it. It seems that I'm doing a survey here. Seems to be a bit of an epidemic of a. Even though Don Wood never gets sick. Congratulations. The rest of us had upper respiratory. Holy guacamole. And in my case, to summarize how I get over that stuff, again, you don't drink. Have a nice day. I'll have a shot of tequila with some lime in it and salt and sweat it out. It took four days. Normally, it takes me two days to get over a cold. So there's something going around.
Interesting. I basically, I just pound vitamin C whenever I feel something coming on, and it knocks it right out. So as soon as I. As soon as I start to feel anything at all. And a lot of people will say, well, if you drink or if you take too much vitamin C, right, it'll create, you know, issues. And so. But I've built up a pretty good ability. So I'll take 4,000, 5,000 milligrams of vitamin C. And you can do it. I used to always do that. I never knew why I did it. I just always did it. And then I met a gentleman. His name was Dr. Bates. He was 84 years old. And he told me that this is what. He started telling me that this is what he does. He takes 4,000 milligrams every day. And he was super healthy. He walked every day. He was in amazing shape. Very sharp, right? And so he's. And we talked about it, and he says, you know, if you get used to building up to about 4,000 milligrams, he says the daily allowance that they tell you you should have, he says, is not right. It's way too low. You should get a lot more. But we don't get enough vitamin C from our foods anymore. So a lot of that's why we have to supplement.
It's a really good idea to do 2000 of milligrams every two hours when you're under the weather so that you keep building up Building up to. As, as you said. But Dr. Woods, you would. You also have a foundation of good sleep and working through your stress and water and, and those things that go with that vitamin C, don't you?
Absolutely. But no, that was a good point though too, Helen, is I don't take 4,000 milligrams at one sitting. I'm taking it and building it up. So not, not all at once, because that wouldn't be good.
So.
Yeah, but definitely the rest as well obviously helps. And the less stress. All of those things was exactly what we talk about. I have a very strong immune system. That's why I never took the COVID vaccine. I said, I'll take my chances on my immune system. I never got it and I don't believe I didn't. I didn't have it in my system. I think I kicked it. So I think if you're really healthy, you can handle a lot of those things. I'm not, I'm not worried about any of those things. And again, if I'm around, if, like, I'm going to be flying when I go flying, I'm taking vitamin C before I go, I take vitamin C with me. So every day that I'm out, I'm taking vitamin C and I'll go through a bottle of it while I'm out there. And that has been the best, best thing I've ever used. It works.
So anyway, so welcome, everybody. I love the survey that we sort of get an idea. I think we're probably closer to negative, a little higher. But we did have a convert with Caitlyn. We converted her over to positive.
And I tell you, it's sort of similar to what John said. The reason I like positive first is it gives you a lot more of a cushion for the negative. So if you get the negative, I find that the positive sort of is dampened a little bit because now you're focused on the negative. But if you have the positive, then it's like, okay, I can take that hit because I feel good about something else. So I think it dilutes the negative where it's the opposite, the negative. Right. If you do the positive first, you dilute the negative. If you do the negative first, you dilute the positive.
If that makes sense. That's a great perspective. You're going to convert me by the end of this. That's my goal. I want 100% convert by the time we're finished.
Again, that's always sort of been the way I've done it. So I find it Works for me.
Anyway. So the other thing we want to talk about too is this is all about relationships. And so I love this because I'm a big believer in. And I've changed over the years about relationships. I'll share some of the stuff that I sort of have seen. But the one thing that I think is really.
Important to understand is there's no perfect relationship. I don't care how hard you work at it. Nothing goes perfect all the time. In fact, what makes a good relationship is the adversity. Because how do you. It's not having adversity that's a problem. It's how do you handle the adversity. And so you have to sort of expect it. And I think that's the problem. And I wrote in my notes, which I thought was really. Do you remember when you first got married? Everybody said the secret to a marriage is never go to bed mad at your partner. And boy, did I try to do that one. The problem is you don't sleep all night because you're feeling so bad that you're upset.
And so now you're trying so hard not to. And then you're just going to stay up all night and wake your partner up and say, okay, let's keep talking about this. So I sort of gave up on that. And again, mad maybe is the wrong term. Upset, right. There's probably a better term to use than mad. But the way to sort of do this is even if you're upset before you go to sleep, you can say, I'm still upset. I love you. Let's talk about it tomorrow.
So the. Your partner's going to bed as well. They may be upset, but you've made the communication that you love them. This isn't about your love. This is just about being upset. And we could talk about it tomorrow. And depending on how the relationship works, some people may say, well, I really want to talk it out first. It may not be the best time to talk about it. So that's a negotiation in your relationship. There's no right or wrong. So people will say, well, you know, I guess I have to talk it out. Well, no, if you're not ready, don't. Don't do that. Because you're not going to go into it with a true spirit of wanting to resolve it. So negotiate.
