This is a short transcript excerpt from a YouTube video in which Dr. Don Wood argues that depression is a function (protective response) of the brain rather than a dysfunction. The speakers frame depression as the mind/body trying to protect the person from ongoing pain or injury, and emphasize empowerment in understanding this protective role.

When people say, oh, I have depression, I say, depression is a function of the brain, not a dysfunction of the brain. It's actually trying to protect you. It's in pain, so it's shutting down to try to stop some pain. But then people look at the symptom of depression and think, that's the problem. It's generally not the problem. It's coming from somewhere. Your mind is trying to create some sort of a response to something that's been trying to fix, but it can't fix it, so it quiets down.
And what's really beautiful about that for.
Your listeners and those who are watching.
