Dr. Don Wood (speaker) advises viewers to stop using hurtful words and to recognize that words are powerful — they can build up or tear down. He explains that different people hear the same words differently because of their personal "atmospheric conditions" (past experiences, upbringing), and that people often repeat language learned from parents or past pain. The core guidance is to be intentional and disciplined about word choice: learn which words hurt and which construct, and use language constructively.

You need to stop using hurtful words. Words are a very powerful force. They can either be constructive or they can be destructive. Words have meanings and different meanings for different people. No two people will experience the same response to a particular word. It's really coming from their own set of atmospheric conditions, the way they heard this language when they were younger, perhaps. So you can use this energy, this power of words to your benefit. You need to learn to discipline yourself, to speak a certain way. Now, you may be currently doing that because of your own experience, maybe coming from your own pain. Someone hurt you earlier in your life, and it's a word that you've learned to use to hurt other people. You may be even copying your parents. Have you ever found yourself saying that? That's what my father used to say. That's what my mother used to say. So we sometimes develop these patterns from these previous experiences earlier in our life. Now, if somebody says something to you that hurts your feelings, the key is to be able to apply understanding that they're filtering through their own set of filters, their own set of atmospheric conditions, that they may be using a word in a particular way. That doesn't mean they're trying to hurt you, but you've experienced that word in a hurtful time. So have you ever said somebody gets upset with you and you say, but that's not what I said. But that's what they heard. They couldn't do it any other way. There's nothing wrong with what you said. There's nothing wrong with the way they responded. Two people can be right in the same situation with the same set of words. The key is to be intentional. Learn what words are hurtful, learn what words are constructive, and there it is.
