Hi, I'm Doug Noll, and I'm the author of De-Escalate: How to Calm an Angry Person in 90 Seconds or Less. Now, that's a pretty bold claim for somebody to make, but let me tell you a little bit about how this book came about. Professionally, I'm a lawyer turned peacemaker, and I've made it my life's work to figure out how to help people solve deep and intractable conflicts. In 2006, in a very difficult mediation, I stumbled across a process that calmed this angry couple down in seconds. I couldn't believe the results I got. So I tried it in some other mediations and it worked just as well. And then in 2007, I read the neuroscience study by Professor Matthew Lieberman at UCLA that explained exactly what it was that was going on in the brain when this process occurred. And that was the beginning. In 2010, I began the Prison of Peace Project with my colleague Laurel Kaufer, and since that time, we have trained thousands of inmates, most serving life sentences and long-term sentences, how to calm angry, outraged inmates in a matter of seconds. I've taught teachers, administrators, doctors, lawyers, healthcare professionals, mental health professionals, and ordinary people how to use these skills to transform lives around them every single day. The ideas are counterintuitive and probably will fly in the face of many of the things that you think you know about how to calm down angry people. But I make this promise to you: if you read the book and practice the steps exactly as I lay them out, you will find that you will listen other people into existence. You will find a calm, centered place for yourself to be no matter what the provocation or outrage towards you is. And you will experience a transcendence that you have never experienced before. It is absolutely amazing. So check out the book, and once you're done reading it, please post an Amazon review because authors like me rely on readers like you to get the word out. Enjoy.
