Doug Noll, a former lawyer turned decision architect, argues that human choices are driven by emotion, not reason. Recognizing this reshapes how we see ourselves and others, fostering compassion and understanding. People are surprised to learn their everyday decisions are emotional at their core.

I'm Doug Noll. I style myself as a lawyer turned peacemaker, but really what I am is a decision architect. And I've lately been going around the country talking to large groups about how emotional our decision-making processes are. And what I've learned in listening to my audience's feedback is that they are completely amazed that every decision we make in our lives every day is totally about emotion and not about rationality. And when people start to learn about the fact that we are emotional beings, not rational beings, they start to see themselves and the people they work with and their families in a completely different light. And I find that it opens their hearts and it makes them more compassionate, more understanding, and less judgmental, and allows them to be happier, more fulfilled beings, and lead more peaceful lives, which is what I'm all about as a lawyer to peacemaker.
