Two fears block deeper conversations: that reflecting someone's emotions will anger them, and that admitting mistakes will too. Neither happens. Instead, drop self-defense and justification. Listen with pure empathy, and the emotional heat dissolves.
Chapters
We think that because we're reflecting somebody else's emotions that they're going to get angry at us for reflecting their emotions. Answer is no, never. Two, we also think if we make a mistake that the other person is going to get pissed off at us. No, never happens. You might correct them, in which case the listener will then reflect back the correction and maybe add in something that isn't there, just to make sure that every— all the bases are getting covered. And that's it. That's the secret to listening in relationships. You get off of trying to defend yourself, you get off of explanation, you get off of rationalization, justification, and you get into empathy, listening the other person into existence. And when that happens, the heat goes away, and it opens the path to a deeper conversation.
