She told us, I've been serving a 25-to-life sentence for a fatal DUI. I killed a family of 4 as a drunk driver. When I came to prison, I had to give up my 3-year-old son to my sister to raise, and I've written him every single week since I've been in prison. He's never called, never visited, never written back. Last week I decided to write a letter based on what you've been teaching me. I thought about all the emotions he must feel having an alcoholic killer for a mother— abandoned, rejected, lonely, angry, frustrated, unloved, grief-stricken, sad. So I wrote that letter. And today, for the first time in 18 years, I received a letter back from him. And at the end of the letter, he said, "Mom, I love you. I'm bringing my girlfriend. We're coming to visit you in 3 weeks." And her thumb was over the word "love" like she didn't want to let it go and couldn't believe that it was really there.
