A cop trainer teaches affect labeling: identify what someone's actually feeling beneath their anger, then name it back to them. Brain scans show this quiets the emotional centers and activates logic. It works because logic arguments make angry people angrier.

The last time I shared this, I was teaching cops how to defuse tense situations without using force. But now I'm dropping it here for free. When someone is angry, logic doesn't calm them down. It makes them angrier. Because humans are emotional, not rational. What works instead is something called affect labeling. Instead of trying to fix the situation, you validate the emotion. And here's how it works. First, ignore the words completely. Next, read the emotions. And lastly, reflect it back with a "you" statement. Brain scans show that when you do this, the parts of the brain that create negative emotion go quiet. While the part responsible for logic lights up. So instead of saying, "Calm down," you say, "You're pissed off, angry, and frustrated." And suddenly, they are calm, because every human feels the same emotions. That's how you disarm a heated situation without ever needing to use force. Have you heard this one before, or is it your first time? Let me know in the comments.
